Felicia glanced up.
Gavin and Max had just walked in. For a moment, Felicia felt completely thrown off.
“Evelynn, you’re awake. How do you feel? Should I get the doctor?” Gavin asked, his voice gentle.
“No, really, I’m fine now,” Felicia replied.
Gavin walked over to her bedside and leaned in. Before Felicia could move away, his hand was already pressed to her forehead.
“You don’t feel feverish anymore. But you haven’t had lunch yet. What do you want? I can have something brought up.”
She shook her head lightly. “I’m not hungry. I’d really like to be alone for a bit. Can you both go?”
Gavin straightened up and glanced at Max. Then he looked back at Felicia. “Max wants to talk to you for a minute.”
Felicia refused to meet Max’s eyes. “There’s nothing for us to talk about. Gavin, take him with you.”
Gavin turned to Max. “Maybe let’s wait until Evelynn’s feeling better.”
Max stared at Felicia, his expression cold. “Gavin, give us a minute,” he said quietly.
Felicia shot him a glare, her voice sharp. “Max, are you deaf? Didn’t you hear what I said?”
Seeing how upset she was, Gavin tried to calm her down. “Evelynn, just relax. I’ll get him out of here. You get some rest.”
He walked over and gave Max’s arm a little shove. “Come on. Evelynn doesn’t want to talk right now. Let her rest.”
Max didn’t move, his eyes still on Felicia.
Gavin tried again, more firmly this time. “Let’s go. Seriously.”
Finally, Max let himself be pushed out. Gavin closed the door behind them and turned to Max.
“I don’t care what your girlfriend’s issues are with Evelynn, but I’m not going to let you hurt her.”
Max shoved his hand in his pocket and started down the hall. “You haven’t even gotten her to like you yet.”
Gavin just shrugged. “Doesn’t matter. I just want her to be happy. That’s all. I love seeing her smile.”
“Hey. Are you still feeling sick? Any dizziness?” Jeremy sat down on the edge of her bed, concern in his eyes.
Felicia shook her head softly. “I’m better now. Just a bit tired.”
She tried to smile.
“This trip really came at the worst time for me,” she said.
Jeremy smiled at her, reassuring. “No one could’ve predicted you’d get sick. The whole idea was to help you relax.”
Felicia gave a faint, grateful smile, her illness only making her look more delicate and beautiful.
“I ran into Gavin and Max just now. Did he say anything to you?”
Felicia shook his head. “No. Gavin took him out before he could. I’m sure he was just here to warn me again.”
“Don’t worry,” Jeremy said quietly. “I won’t let Andrea or Max mess with you anymore.”
Felicia looked at him, her expression apologetic and weary. “I’m just causing you more trouble.”
