“Nice!” Gavin cheered, unable to hide his excitement.
Max turned, his gaze landing on Felicia.
She looked right back at him, her eyes cool and unreadable. “Your turn.”
Without a word, Max walked to the other side of the table. This next shot would decide everything. With steady hands, he lined it up and, in one smooth motion, sank both his chosen ball and the eight-ball into the pocket.
Gavin let out a protest. “If you hadn’t broken first, Evelynn would’ve won. No question.”
Felicia had played flawlessly the whole game. So had Max. Neither had shown any sign of giving in.
“Want to go again, Evelynn?” Gavin suggested.
Felicia glanced at Max, their eyes locking for a long second. His gaze was dark and impossible to read, the air between them turning colder by the second.
Felicia was about to say something when a voice suddenly cut in.
“Max!”
Andrea walked in with her friends, her eyes instantly narrowing when she saw Felicia. Her whole face went cold. She clenched her fists and strode straight up, hand raised, ready to slap her.
Gavin stepped between them, his voice sharp. “Miss Curtis, what do you think you’re doing?”
Andrea stopped in her tracks.
Felicia stayed calm. “It’s alright. I’m kind of curious about what she wants to do.”
A man’s voice broke through, cold as ice. “Evelynn!”
Felicia’s heart skipped a beat. She turned and met his eyes. His handsome face was set in stone, radiating anger.
“Do you really think you can get away with anything?”
Before Felicia could answer, Gavin jumped in. “Max, whatever’s going on between Evelynn and your girlfriend, that’s their business. But if you try to mess with Evelynn, you’ll have to answer to me.”
Max turned to him, his jaw set. “Gavin, don’t get carried away.”
Gavin’s face fell.
Felicia took a breath. “Max, what do you want?”
Max glanced at her, his eyes cold, then walked straight over to Andrea. He wrapped an arm around her waist. “Let’s go.”
Felicia stood frozen, her hands clenched tight as she watched them walk out together.
“Evelynn?” Gavin’s voice was soft with worry.
Her phone started buzzing. She checked the screen. It was Jeremy.
Felicia nodded and told him everything Cameron had said. None of it surprised her.
“So what will you do now?”
She sounded exhausted. “I’m not sure yet. I’ll figure it out after we get back to the Capital tomorrow.”
“Alright.”
Lunch arrived soon after, brought up by a staff member. They chatted about other things while they ate.
In the afternoon, Jeremy had plans to play golf with Jim and some other business leaders.
“You go ahead,” Felicia told him. “I think I’ll just stay in the room for a while.”
She didn’t want to go anywhere.
“Okay.”
Felicia spent the whole afternoon alone in her room, her mind spinning, unable to focus on anything.
Eventually, she reached out to Anne.
Anne was overjoyed to get her call. She was out having fun but immediately ran back to the car, eager to talk. Seeing Anne’s face on video, Felicia finally felt her mood lift a little.
