Still, it was obvious Max wasn’t really interested in Evelynn.
There were so many questions on their mind, but in the end, they kept quiet. They figured they would just report everything to Mrs. Hawthorne later and let her handle it.
Upstairs, Felicia and Anne headed to the bedroom. Anne pulled out her drawing, a portrait she’d made of her mom, and held it up for Felicia. “Look, do you think I did a good job?”
Felicia took the picture from her. Anne had drawn the face in a bright, childlike way, but the little mole under the eye was unmistakable. She was definitely drawing Felicia.
Felicia studied the picture, smiling softly. “It’s beautiful, Anne. You did an amazing job.”
Anne’s eyes lit up. “Then it’s for you. I want you to have it.”
Felicia reached out and gently patted Anne’s head. “Thank you.”
Anne grinned. “You’re welcome. I’ve already packed my things. Can I go to your place today?”
“Of course you can. But can you wait a little while? I need to talk to your dad first.”
“Okay, I’ll wait for you,” Anne promised.
They left the room together. Felicia asked a maid where Max was, and when she heard he was in the study, Anne offered to show her the way. She figured Felicia might get lost otherwise. When they got there, Anne pushed the door open. “Daddy?”
Max was sitting on the sofa, flipping through a book. He looked up at his daughter. “What’s up?”
“Evelynn wants to talk to you,” Anne announced, then looked back at Felicia.
Max’s eyes landed on Felicia. His expression chilled instantly.
“Anne, can you wait outside? I need to talk to your dad alone.”
“Okay.” Anne slipped out, obedient as always.
Felicia closed the door behind her. The study went quiet. The air felt heavy, almost tense.
Isaac told Max the chairman’s daughter had spoken to Felicia alone.
Max must have thought Felicia tried to use the situation for herself, planning to dump all the blame on the other woman.
Afterward, the CEO’s daughter paid for it. Max retaliated hard. It would have been so easy for him to find out the truth about what really happened.
But none of that mattered. In the end, he still blamed her.
“You looked down on me. You decided I wasn’t good enough and took it all out on me. When I showed up at the Hawthorne house pregnant, you could’ve turned me away. Why didn’t you? Wasn’t it because me showing up actually helped you and your family? I don’t owe you anything. I don’t owe the Hawthornes anything. So why are you treating me like this?”
She let it all out in one breath, her voice shaking by the end.
Max turned around, his gaze sharp as frost, the room suddenly cold. He stared at Felicia, and it felt like his eyes cut right through her, leaving her frozen in place.
“Are you done?”
