“Thank you, Professor. I want to try talking to Max myself, just one more time. I’ll reach out to you after that.”
For Anne’s sake, if nothing else, Felicia didn’t want things to turn ugly.
“All right,” Jeremy replied.
Felicia called Cameron next, letting him know she had to cancel their meeting for today.
After breakfast, she drove straight to Oakridge Estate. She pulled up in front of the villa and parked. In the past, it was impossible to pin down where Max might be, but lately, he spent most weekends at home.
Felicia rang the doorbell.
Amaris answered quickly, her expression souring the instant she saw who it was. Felicia didn’t bother acknowledging her and stepped right inside.
“Hey, what do you think you’re doing? Evelynn, you don’t live here,” Amaris said, moving to block her path.
Felicia stopped, giving her a cold, steady look. “If you don’t want trouble, step aside.”
Amaris froze, clearly intimidated. Felicia brushed past her and walked into the villa.
She could hear piano music drifting from one of the rooms as she entered the living room. The maid noticed Felicia but didn’t try to stop her, just watched as Felicia made her way toward the music room, looking for all the world like she belonged there.
Felicia paused at the doorway. Inside, Max and Anne were seated together at the piano. The room was bright and warm, sunlight streaming in. Anne looked adorable in her blue princess dress, sitting perfectly still, like a little porcelain doll.
Max wore a casual shirt in a shade that matched Anne’s dress. His long, graceful fingers moved over the piano keys, his whole presence gentle and elegant. He played along with Anne, keeping to her rhythm.
Father and daughter exchanged a smile, their eyes shining like stars. When Max looked at Anne, his gaze was full of pride and tenderness.
Then Max noticed Felicia standing at the door. He only glanced her way for a second before looking back at his daughter.
Felicia picked her up and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Anne giggled, smacking a kiss on Felicia’s face in return.
“Let’s go upstairs. I want to show you the picture I drew.”
“Of course,” Felicia said, smiling.
She glanced up at Max, then carried Anne upstairs.
Downstairs, Amaris and Marian could only stare, disbelief written on their faces. Did she really think she was the lady of the house?
They watched Max as he walked by, not making any move to stop Felicia or Anne. For a second, they couldn’t figure out why he’d let some outsider get so close to the young miss.
Still, there was no denying that Evelynn was stunning. She had a presence, a quiet confidence that made even Andrea seem ordinary by comparison.
