Max tried to calm Anne down. “Alright, Daddy gets it,” he said.
“Then you have to apologize to Evelynn later,” Anne insisted.
Felicia stepped out of the shower and noticed Anne hadn’t come back yet. She waited for a bit, then walked next door and opened the door.
Max and Anne were sitting together on the sofa, both looking over as she appeared.
“Anne, it’s bedtime,” Felicia said from the doorway.
Anne slid off Max’s lap, ran straight to Felicia, and reached for her hand. “Come on, Evelynn. Daddy needs to say sorry to you.”
Felicia hesitated, glancing at Max. He didn’t look like someone about to apologize for anything.
She took Anne’s hand. “No need for apologies. Let’s just go to bed.”
She couldn’t stand the thought of Max giving her some half-hearted apology. It would only make her feel worse.
Felicia led Anne back to their room.
In bed, Anne cuddled up in Felicia’s arms, rubbing her face against her. “You smell so good and you’re so soft. I love your scent.”
Felicia hugged her tight, her heart turning to mush.
Five years. The little girl who used to kick inside her belly was now right here, so big and beautiful and heartbreakingly sweet.
She didn’t have to reach out for a dream anymore. Her daughter was real, right beside her, warm and breathing.
Felicia hummed a lullaby, her hand gently patting Anne’s back until she drifted off.
Anne fell asleep quickly in Felicia’s arms. Felicia just lay there, watching her little face, feeling like she could stare at her forever and still not have enough.
Anne slept through the night, peaceful and content, not even a hint of restlessness.
The next morning, the air in the mountains felt extra fresh and crisp.
Max came downstairs and heard laughter coming from the kitchen. He followed the sound and found Felicia and Anne at the counter, making pies together.
Felicia was wearing the same green dress from yesterday, her hair pinned up, showing off the elegant curve of her neck. She had an apron tied around her waist and was gently teaching Anne how to shape the pie.
When Max saw the food in his bowl, he gave the faintest hint of a smile.
Felicia caught that small change in his expression and felt a strange discomfort twist in her chest, like he was mocking her for something.
Max took a bite of one of Anne’s pies.
“Daddy, do you like it? Is it good?” Anne asked, eyes hopeful.
“It’s delicious,” Max replied.
“Then try one of Evelynn’s,” Anne said, picking up another pie of pie and placing it in his plate.
Max accepted it, lifting his eyes to meet Felicia’s. She felt the weight of his stare, and for a moment, their gazes locked.
Felicia’s eyes turned cool.
His look felt almost like a challenge as he ate the pie Anne had given him.
