“I might be busy a little longer, Anne. If you’re tired, you should go to bed first.”

Anne pouted. “No, I want to wait for you. I want us to sleep together.”

Felicia had started tucking Anne in every night. It was their routine now. If Max was coming home tonight, Felicia figured she could wait until Anne was asleep before leaving.

“I’ll be a little while. Be good, okay?”

“Okay. I’ll be good and wait for you to come back.”

“Alright.”

Felicia set her phone down and turned to see Jeremy walking out.

“Is the appraisal finished?”

Jeremy nodded. “Yeah, I signed everything. Let’s go.”

Felicia had come with Jeremy today.

“Do you want to go home?” he asked.

“Can you drop me at Oakridge Estate?” Felicia asked.

Jeremy gave her a look. “Anne’s waiting for you, isn’t she?”

“Yeah, I need to see her. She won’t sleep unless I tuck her in.”

Jeremy just nodded and looked away, saying nothing else.

When the car pulled up in front of the villa, Felicia got out.

“Should I wait for you?” Jeremy asked.

Felicia nodded. “Sorry for the trouble, Professor.”

Amaris jumped in. “Exactly. She schemed her way into Mr. Hawthrone’s life. How could she ever be a decent woman? Why does he let someone like her take care of Miss Anne?”

The two of them went back and forth, letting out their frustration.

Then a cold voice cut in. “What are you talking about?”

The words hit like ice water. Marian and Amaris jumped and looked toward the door. Max was standing there, his face completely blank but somehow giving off the kind of pressure that made it hard to breathe.

They’d watched him grow up, but they were still scared of him.

Amaris and Marian hurried over, standing stiffly. “Sir, you’re back.”

Max looked down at them, his dark eyes sharp enough to see right through them.

Both women kept their heads down, nerves stretched so tight they barely dared to breathe.
