Jeremy waited outside for what felt like forever. When Felicia still didn’t show, he figured she was busy getting Anne to sleep, and calling her seemed out of place. In the end, he just pressed the doorbell.

Amaris opened the door and nearly jumped when she saw the handsome, tall stranger standing there. She instantly guessed he was here for Felicia. In her mind, she decided this must be one of Felicia’s secret flings, bold enough to come right to their door. This was her chance to let Max see what kind of woman Felicia really was.

She let Jeremy in and told him to find Felicia himself. Even though Jeremy picked up on her unfriendly vibe, he still followed her inside.

Max appeared at the top of the stairs, moving slowly as he looked down at the two women. Both Amaris and Marian glanced up at him, and only then did they notice the red mark on his face. Earlier, they’d heard the faint sound of a slap from upstairs, but neither dared to guess what had happened. Did Max get hit? By Felicia? How could she? No one ever dared stand up to him.

The shock left them speechless.

Max’s voice was low and cold. “You really just let anyone walk in here.”

Amaris’s heart skipped a beat. She wanted to defend herself, but the look on his face made her drop her head. “I’m sorry, sir. I shouldn’t have done that.”

Marian jumped in, unable to help herself. “Sir, that man is obviously close to Felicia. She might have taken Miss Anne out to meet strange men. We’re just worried she’ll be a bad influence on Miss Anne.”

Amaris quickly agreed. “Yes, exactly, sir.”

Max just said, “Focus on your own jobs. This is the last time. Don’t let me repeat myself again.”

Both women lowered their heads, their voices barely above a whisper. “Yes, sir.” After that, neither dared say another word.

Later, after Jeremy left and got into his car, he pulled out his phone and called Sam.

“Mr. Milman, it’s pretty late. What’s up?”

“Daddy!” Anne called out.

Max looked up, set his coffee and newspaper aside, and watched as Felicia set Anne down. Anne ran straight to him. Max picked her up and settled her in his lap. She tipped her head back to give him a kiss. “Good morning, Daddy.”

“Good morning. Let’s eat breakfast.”

“Okay.”

Max placed Anne in her high chair. Felicia sat next to her. Anne glanced at her dad and said, “Daddy, you have to say good morning to Evelynn.”

Max’s gaze shifted to Felicia. She didn’t meet his eyes. Instead, she tied Anne’s bib and asked gently, “Your teacher said you’re giving a speech today. Are you nervous?”
