“Let me go!”

Her voice barely faded when hurried footsteps echoed down the hall. Then a sharp voice rang out. “Max, let her go.”

Max turned and saw Jeremy coming toward them fast, his brows drawn tight, his dark eyes icy cold.

Felicia seized the chance. She yanked her hand back and slapped Max hard across the face.

The sound of the slap echoed down the corridor.

Jeremy stopped in his tracks, stunned by what he saw.

Felicia shoved Max away and made for Jeremy, but Max caught her arm again.

Jeremy grabbed her other hand. The sudden pull made Felicia’s arm ache, like it might pop out of its socket.

“Mr. Milman, what exactly do you think you’re doing?” Max’s voice was low and cold.

Jeremy stared right back at him. The tension between them was so thick it was hard to breathe.

“Mr. Hawthorne, you don’t have the right to control Felicia. Let her go.”

Max’s eyes were as dark and deep as the night outside. “Do you need me to remind you who she is now?”

Felicia glared at Max, trying to pull her hand free. “Max, for Anne’s sake, I don’t want to make a scene. Don’t push me.”

Just then, a wailing cry came from Anne’s room. Through her sobs, she called out, “Evelynn!”

Felicia’s heart squeezed tight.

Max let go of Felicia and pushed open Anne’s bedroom door. The second it opened, Anne’s cries got even louder.

When she saw her father, Anne only cried harder. “Daddy, Evelynn’s gone!”

Max rushed over and scooped his daughter into his arms.

Felicia stood in the doorway, listening to her daughter’s sobs. With every cry, her heart felt like it was being squeezed tighter and tighter.

Anne clung to Felicia’s neck like she’d never let go, terrified she might disappear again.

Max looked at them for a moment, then turned and walked out.

Jeremy was still standing in the doorway. When Max stepped out, their eyes met.

Jeremy didn’t say a word. He just turned and left.

Max stood there, watching him go. He closed the door, then headed downstairs.

Marian and Amaris were both still in the living room. They’d heard all the noise and were clearly worried.

When Jeremy came down with a stormy look on his face, both women suddenly felt nervous and kept their distance.

Then Max came down too, his expression just as grim.

The two women exchanged uneasy glances, guilt written all over their faces. “S… Sir.”
