Felicia sat by Anne’s side, watching her sleep. She stayed for a few more minutes, just listening to the soft sound of Anne’s breathing, then finally stood up.

She slipped into Anne’s walk-in closet to change. Since she’d been living here, she kept a couple of outfits hanging in the back, tucked between Anne’s dresses. She pulled on fresh clothes, took off her jewelry, and dropped everything into a small bag.

When she came out, she paused at the door, glancing back at Anne sprawled peacefully on the bed. Her heart twisted with hesitation. But in the end, she pushed down the ache and forced herself to leave.

Out in the hallway, she almost collided with Max as he stepped out of his room. Felicia kept her voice cool and steady. “I’m leaving. Let Anne know in the morning.”

Max’s eyes flickered to the bag in her hand. Just as Felicia turned to go, his voice stopped her.

“What are you so afraid of?”

She froze. Turning back, she met his cold, unreadable stare and replied, calm as ever, “I just don’t want to be in the same house with you.”

Max let out a quiet chuckle and walked toward her. Felicia’s hands curled into fists at her sides, every nerve on edge. She watched him closely, ready for anything.

He stopped right in front of her, looking down. “If you didn’t want to be under the same roof as me, why did you have my kid five years ago?”

Felicia’s breath caught in her throat. She stared at him, thrown by his twisted logic, not even sure how to answer.

After a few stunned seconds, she looked away, refusing to get sucked into another pointless argument. There was no winning with him. In Max’s world, he was always right. He was always like this, domineering and impossible.

She turned to leave.

But before she could take a step, his hand shot out and grabbed her wrist. The force of it made her drop the bag she was holding. It thudded to the floor.

“Max, what the hell…” Felicia snapped, anger flaring.

“You…” She struggled to keep her voice steady, forcing herself to stay calm. “You think I wanted to leave? You think I wanted to abandon Anne? You forced me, all of you. So what right do you have to question me?”

Max’s gaze never left her. “I gave you a chance back then.”

Felicia let out a bitter laugh. “A chance? All you did was humiliate me.”

“That was what you thought, Felicia. All your own wishful thinking. You can’t blame anyone else.”

“You…”

Felicia’s face drained of color, fury burning in her eyes. She just wanted to break free, to slap him as hard as she could.
