Max didn’t try to hide it. “She’s getting ready to divorce me.”

Miranda’s eyes widened in surprise.

She knew Max had stayed married to Felicia mostly for Anne. No one ever brought up Anne’s mom around the little girl, but Anne was growing up fast. She was smart, too. Even if the adults kept quiet, she’d start figuring things out on her own.

Miranda took a slow, steady breath. “I never would’ve pegged her for such a cold mother. So what are you planning to do, Max?”

Max’s expression was unreadable. “If she can’t even accept Anne, there’s no way I’m just going to let her have her way.”

Miranda studied her grandson for a moment. “As long as you know what you’re doing.” Her voice softened as she added, “If you really want to give Anne a real home, do your best for her. Maybe dial things back a bit, for her sake.”

Max nodded. “I know.”

Around two in the afternoon, Felicia got a message from Max with Anne’s medical report attached.

It was a full pediatric checkup. Nothing major came up, just some notes about allergies to watch out for.

Felicia let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding. She felt relieved.

Right then, someone knocked on her office door.

“Come in,” she called.

Luke walked in, holding a box in his hands. He’d called her around lunchtime.

“Afternoon,” he said, setting the box on her desk. “These came from Switzerland. Your favorite.”

Felicia glanced at the box, reaching for it with a smile. “Thank you. How did you know I’ve been craving something sweet?”

Luke leaned casually against her desk, watching her closely. “I know you,” he said, and his eyes held a warmth that made Felicia’s smile linger.

She opened the box, took out a cookie, and tried a bite. It was her favorite brand, just as delicious as she remembered.

Luke grabbed one for himself. Felicia wasn’t busy, so they chatted for a while.

“Jeremy,” she greeted.

“Felicia, are you busy right now?” Jeremy asked.

“Not really. What’s up?”

“If you’re free, could you come by Sam’s studio? There’s something I need to talk to you about.”

Felicia hesitated. “Did something happen?”

“Let’s talk when you get here,” Jeremy replied.

“Alright. I’ll come over.”

She hung up and looked at Luke. “Perfect timing. My free chauffeur is here to give me a ride.”

Luke grinned. “Let’s go.”
