They were waiting for the elevator when the doors slid open. Andrea stepped out and spotted Darin, her eyes wide with surprise. “Hey, what are you doing here? You didn’t even tell me you were coming.”
Darin smiled at her. “I’m here to talk to Max about some things. How was work today?”
Andrea’s face instantly fell at the reminder. Darin reached out and ruffled her hair. “Don’t worry. It’s okay if you didn’t nail it this time. You’ll get the hang of it. Just remember, at work you’re an employee like everyone else, so don’t get all moody.”
Andrea pouted, barely above a whisper. “Yeah, I know. So where are you guys off to now?”
“We’re grabbing something to eat.”
She huffed. “And you’re not taking me?”
“We have work stuff to discuss. Next time, I’ll bring you along.”
“Fine, whatever.”
Max chimed in, “Isaac will come find you later. Let him show you how to do the meeting notes right.”
Andrea glanced over and nodded. “Okay.”
Darin gave her a few more words of advice, then he and Max got into the elevator and headed downstairs.
By the time Max made it back to his office, it was already half past two. He pulled out his phone, dialed a number, and said, “I need you to look into two people for me.”
That night, Felicia didn’t finish work until nine. She was just packing up her laptop when Jeremy knocked and poked his head in. “All done?”
Felicia nodded. “Yeah, finally.”
She grabbed her bag and walked out with him. They headed downstairs together, ready to hunt for some late-night food. Greg had driven her to the office that morning.
Felicia climbed into Jeremy’s car, and they drove to a pho shop nearby.
Jeremy glanced over. “So, when are you flying to the States next week?”
He stopped in front of Felicia. “Let’s go.”
She stepped down from the curb, and Jeremy tilted the umbrella so it covered her more, leaving just a bit of space between them.
Felicia looked out at the rainy night. “It’ll probably cool off after this. Summer’s finally over.”
Jeremy nodded. “Yeah, crazy how fast time goes. Last year around this time, you were still in the US.”
They walked along, chatting quietly.
“Hard to believe I’ve already been back three months,” Felicia said. So much had happened, none of it what she expected. She’d thought the divorce with Max would be simple. She thought she wouldn’t have to see Anne again. She thought she could handle being away from her daughter, that she’d be able to start fresh without looking back.
But nothing had gone the way she’d planned. Now, she wasn’t even sure she wanted to think too far ahead.
Jeremy glanced sideways at her. The streetlights lit up her face, and her eyes, usually clear and bright, looked a little misty tonight.
