She was lost in thought when a noise from upstairs caught her attention.

Everyone glanced toward the staircase. Tatiana was coming down, holding Anne’s hand, with Yvonne and Andrea right behind them.

Tatiana really didn’t want Anne to stick with Felicia today, but Anne wouldn’t have it. The older she got, the more independent she became, and the more time she spent with Felicia, the more attached she seemed.

“Evelynn!”

Anne broke into a grin and rushed to Felicia as soon as she reached the bottom step.

Felicia met her halfway, smiling.

Tatiana gave Felicia a chilly look, then bent down to say something quietly to Anne.

“Bye, Grandma. Bye, Grandma Yvonne.”

Anne waved at them, cheerful as ever.

Yvonne shot Felicia a strange look before leaving with Andrea and Tatiana. Felicia watched them go, uneasy. Maybe she was overthinking it, but there was something off about the way Yvonne looked at her. It didn’t feel like the same woman who’d sent her to the police station before. It was like she’d completely changed.

“Felicia, let’s go,” Heather called, snapping her out of it.

Felicia shook off her thoughts and followed the others outside.

Once they were out the door, Yvonne turned to Tatiana. “If this Evelynn is Anne’s mom, why hasn’t she told Anne?”

Tatiana’s eyes narrowed, her voice icy. “She abandoned her kid and disappeared. Of course she’s too ashamed to admit it. At least she knows better than to try.”

Yvonne frowned. “Even so, Anne really seems to like her.”

As evening rolled in, there was still no word from Greg or Luke. Felicia couldn’t help but worry.

She, Heather, and Savannah took the kids out to The Willow Bistro for dinner. By coincidence, they ran into Colt from the financial magazine and his friends.

Felicia stopped to chat with them for a bit while Savannah and Heather took the kids upstairs to a private room. She didn’t linger long.

On her way up, her phone buzzed. It was Luke. She picked up and slipped out onto a quiet balcony.

She leaned against the balcony rail, letting the night air clear her head. She stayed there for a while, lost in her thoughts, until Savannah called her back.

Felicia took a deep breath and went inside. As she rounded a corner, she heard a familiar voice. She stepped forward and looked up.

It was Max, phone in hand.

Andrea was with him. She froze for a second when she saw Felicia, then her face hardened.

Felicia didn’t bother to hide her irritation. Why did she keep running into them everywhere?

She looked away, pretending not to notice.

Max glanced at her, said a few last words into his phone, then hung up.

As Felicia started to walk past, Max called out, “Where’s Anne?”

Felicia stopped and turned to him, her voice icy. “You can show off your girlfriend anywhere you want, but don’t bring her near Anne again.”
