Max glanced their way, said a quick word to Hank and the other man, then started toward Darin.

Felicia noticed Max heading in her direction and stood up. “Excuse me for a moment.” Darin only nodded.

She walked straight out of the banquet hall. Max watched her leave, eyes locked on her silhouette as she disappeared through the doors. At the same time, Andrea caught sight of Felicia, a flash of malice passing through her eyes.

Outside, the corridor was quiet, almost peaceful compared to the bustle inside. Felicia just wanted a break, some space to breathe. She wandered down the hallway and found her way onto a quiet terrace. The night air was cool, brushing against her skin, and the city lights of Northwick stretched out before her, sparkling in the darkness.

That was when her phone buzzed. Felicia fished it out of her little bag and answered.

“Anne?”

“ I’m sorry. I missed your call. I just saw it now.”

The sound of her daughter’s soft voice melted away the heaviness in Felicia’s chest.

“It’s okay, sweetheart. I was busy this morning and couldn’t keep you company. I’m sorry.”

“I know you’re busy. I’m not upset,” Anne replied quickly.

Anne was so understanding, and that only made Felicia’s guilt grow.

“I haven’t seen you all day. When are you coming home tonight?”

Felicia could hear the careful hope in her daughter’s voice. “I’m coming home now.”

She didn’t want to stay here any longer. Anthony’s still here, so you didn’t have to worry much.

Anne’s mood instantly lifted. “Okay.”

Felicia hung up and called Anthony. He picked up almost right away.

Max held Felicia close, his gaze cold as he warned, “I don’t want to see you again.”

The man only lowered his head, silent and defeated.

Max turned and walked away, carrying Felicia in his arms.

Felicia drifted back to consciousness, her senses wrapped in the gentle, sweet scent of milk. Warmth surrounded her, comforting and soft, and something small and squishy was snuggled up in her arms. She instinctively hugged it tighter, sinking into the cozy feeling.

Suddenly, she jolted awake. The room was dark, but she could feel the little body pressed against her. As her eyes adjusted, she realized Anne was nestled in her embrace, her small head resting against Felicia’s chest.

For a moment, Felicia just sat there, disoriented, trying to piece together what had happened.
