Dr. Dodson nodded, reminding Max, “The health report you sent looked good. Everything’s stable. Just remember to bring her in for a check-up every year.”
“I know,” Max replied.
At noon, they had lunch at the Dodson family home. After eating, they didn’t stay long. They said their goodbyes and headed out.
Anne wanted to go to the ocean park to see the dolphins, so Max drove them there next. The place was huge, and most of the time, Max carried Anne in his arms. When Anne reached out for her mom, Max said calmly, “Evelynn can’t hold you for long. Daddy will do it.”
Felicia caught the hint of sarcasm in his tone when he mentioned Evelynn’s name.
Anne just nodded. “Then I want to hold Mommy’s hand. Mommy, hold my hand.”
She stretched out her tiny hand, and Felicia took it, not really having another choice.
All through the park, Anne kept calling out for her mom, her voice so full of excitement it was like she wanted everyone to know she finally had her mother with her. Max snapped photos of the two of them, camera in hand. The three of them turned heads everywhere they went. Good looks, happy faces, Max juggling Anne’s backpack and all their stuff.
To everyone else, they looked like the perfect happy family.
That evening, the three of them had dinner out. On the drive back, Anne curled up in Felicia’s arms and drifted off to sleep.
“Drop me off at the Grand Hyatt,” Felicia said quietly.
Max glanced at her, but once Anne fell asleep, all the softness faded from Felicia’s face. The car filled with a heavy, awkward silence. Max turned his attention back to the road and changed course toward the hotel, not saying a word.
Felicia didn’t take Anne with her. She gently set her daughter down on the car seat, watching Anne’s sleeping face for a moment, her heart aching. Sharing a bed with Anne every night had already become a habit she didn’t want to break.
She gave her daughter’s cheek a gentle touch, closed the car door, and headed into the hotel.
Max watched her go, then turned his focus back to the road and drove away.
Felicia checked in at the front desk and headed to her room. As soon as she walked in, her phone rang. It was Sam.
She ended the call and sank onto the sofa, feeling completely drained.
That night, she couldn’t stop thinking. She was ready to spend the rest of her life making it up to Anne, but she knew she had to cut things off with Max once and for all.
Felicia booked a flight to the Capital for six-thirty the next morning. After that, she called Jeremy.
He picked up right away. “Hi Felicia.”
“Jeremy, I’m flying back to the Capital tomorrow morning,” she told him. She knew she should let him know.
He didn’t sound surprised. “There’s nothing you need to handle here anymore. Just go back and focus on your own work.”
He paused, then asked, “Are you taking Anne with you?”
“I’m going by myself for now. The hearing is at ten, and I want to see how things turn out.”
