Max hung around the villa with Darin for a bit longer before he got ready to leave. Before heading out, he pulled the housekeeper aside and asked her to keep an eye on Darin. No alcohol, he told her. She nodded right away and promised she’d make sure of it.

After saying a few more words to Darin, Max left the villa and drove back toward the Hawthorne family estate. The city was alive with holiday decorations everywhere, lanterns and lights giving everything a festive glow for the holiday.

He stopped at a red light, his gaze drifting absently over the crowd crossing the street. That’s when he spotted Felicia. She wore a khaki trench coat over a long white dress, her hair catching the autumn breeze. The wind lifted her hair, showing off her delicate profile as she chatted with the man next to her. She had a cup of coffee in her hand, and Max couldn’t quite see her expression.

The man walking with her wore glasses and listened quietly, a soft, gentle look in his eyes. As they strolled side by side, a few people passing by couldn’t help but glance back at them, obviously struck by how good they looked together.

The light changed. Max pressed the gas and drove off.

Felicia and Jeremy continued on toward the theater. They had planned to see a concert together, and since Jeremy hadn’t gone back to Northwick, the timing worked out perfectly. It was the orchestra’s final show in the capital, and after weeks of working nonstop, Felicia was ready for a break.

They found their seats in the packed concert hall. Every seat seemed filled. The concert was set to last an hour and a half.

About thirty minutes in, Felicia’s phone vibrated. It was Anne. She slipped out quietly to take the call.

“Evelynn, when are you coming to get me?” Anne asked.

Felicia had promised Anne that she’d have her over for dinner tonight. Their first real holiday meal together. “I’ll come for you a little after five,” Felicia said. That would be right after the concert ended.

“Where are you? Can I come find you now?” Anne sounded eager.

Felicia hesitated. Anne was probably at the Hawthorne estate, and honestly, Felicia didn’t want to go there if she could help it. So she agreed anyway. Anne could come meet her, and the timing would work out.

Felicia made her way over, Jeremy walking beside her.

Max noticed them coming. Anne saw Felicia and ran straight to her. “Evelynn!”

Felicia smiled and took Anne’s hand, her grip gentle. Anne looked up at Jeremy and greeted him with a polite, “Uncle Jeremy.”

“Anne, it’s been a while,” Jeremy said, smiling back.

Felicia watched them, her eyes soft.

Max stayed where he was, quietly looking on. When Felicia glanced at him, she noticed the scar along his cheek. It was still pretty visible; she’d left that day when she hit him with her bag.
