They were still chatting when the waiter brought over their food. After dinner, Felicia went with Luke to a nearby luxury mall. His mom’s birthday was coming up, and he hadn’t picked out a gift yet. Since he finally had some free time, he wanted Felicia’s opinion. She agreed, happy to take a stroll and walk off dinner.

Luke parked in the underground lot, and they took the elevator up. They walked into a high-end jewelry store, where a saleswoman greeted them right away. She couldn’t help but notice Luke’s effortless style and the insanely expensive watch on his wrist. She found herself wondering how a guy like him ended up with someone as simply dressed as Felicia. They just didn’t look like they belonged in the same world. Rich people’s tastes could really be a mystery. Still, she kept her thoughts to herself and smiled politely. Since she knew they were shopping for an older family member, she invited them to sit down on the couch.

The saleswoman laid out a row of gemstone jewelry on the coffee table, each piece more stunning than the last, with price tags that were seriously jaw-dropping. Luke picked up a pearl necklace and turned it over in his hands.

Felicia nodded at a different necklace. “I think this one would really suit your mom. Take a look.”

Luke glanced at the piece in his hand, set it down, and reached for the sapphire necklace Felicia was holding. The saleswoman immediately started explaining the materials and the design.

Luke looked it over and nodded. “It’s beautiful. We’ll take this set. And can you wrap up the pearl necklace too?”

“Of course. Just a moment, please.”

The saleswoman returned the jewelry to the counter. Luke got up to pay. She carefully boxed everything and handed the bag to him. Luke took it and walked back to Felicia.

“Let’s go.”

Felicia pushed herself up, one hand on her belly. As she stood, she noticed the lace on her flat shoe had come undone. Luke noticed too. He set the shopping bag on the table, knelt in front of her, and tied her shoelace without a second thought.

The store staff watched in quiet surprise. It was obvious this man cared about his wife, but her simple outfit really didn’t scream “rich wife.” Neither Luke nor Felicia knew what was running through the staff’s minds.

Luke finished tying the shoelace and stood up. “All done.”

Max just nodded. “What did you get?”

“A birthday present for my mom,” Luke replied. “We’re all set, so we’ll get going.”

Max didn’t say anything else.

Luke grabbed the shopping bag and turned to Felicia. “Ready?”

Felicia kept her eyes on the floor, refusing to look at Max or Andrea, and followed Luke out.

Andrea watched them leave, then tilted her head up at Max. “They seem pretty close, don’t they?”
