Savannah didn’t say a word for a long time. Felicia finally broke the silence. “Should you call Jeremy?”
Before Savannah could answer, her phone buzzed again. It was Jeremy. She picked up, her voice sounding a little rough. “Hey, Jeremy.”
“I heard what happened,” Jeremy said. “Did your dad call?”
Savannah nodded, even though he couldn’t see. “Yeah. He wants me at The Spoon right now.”
“Go check it out,” Jeremy told her. “But don’t do anything reckless. Seriously.”
“I get it,” Savannah said quietly.
After she hung up, she took a breath and tried to calm herself. She looked at Felicia. “Sorry, Felicia. I should take you home first.”
Felicia shook her head. “The subway’s just up ahead. I’ll be fine.”
Her husband was taking out his anger on his girlfriend, and Felicia couldn’t do anything about it. She couldn’t help but wonder if what she had said to Max the other day just made things worse.
Savannah didn’t push. She just told Felicia to be careful on her way back.
Before getting out, Felicia turned to her. “Savannah, don’t act on impulse, okay? Your dad’s company has to come first.”
Felicia knew Savannah could be stubborn and had a strong sense of right and wrong.
Savannah managed a small smile. “I know. Don’t worry.”
Savannah drove off, and Felicia stood on the sidewalk, watching until the car disappeared into traffic. She turned and walked toward the subway.
Right as she was about to go down the stairs, her phone vibrated. She pulled it from her bag. It was Luke.
“Hey, Luke,” she answered.
“Look across the street,” he said.
He took her to a cozy little restaurant with big windows overlooking the river. The city lights reflected off the water, making everything look kind of magical.
Once they ordered, Felicia let the waiter know about her food allergies, and he nodded, making a note.
“So, did you sign the contract?” she asked.
“All done,” Luke replied. “Things are about to get hectic. Today’s probably my last night off for a while. Are you still at BlueMarble Investments?”
Felicia took a sip of her juice. “No, I quit. I wanted something less stressful, so now I’m working as an assistant for my mentor before.”
Luke gave her a look. “You should get a medal for loving work this much.”
Felicia raised an eyebrow. “If it comes with a cash bonus, I might actually accept it.”
Luke burst out laughing. “You better watch out, your eyes are turning into little dollar signs.”
