Miranda didn’t stay long. Before leaving, she pulled Felicia aside for a few words. The message was obvious. Felicia needed to settle in here now that she was married. No more running back to her parents’ house all the time.

Max headed upstairs to his study. Felicia went back to her own room, curled up on the sofa, and called Ava.

Ava picked up right away. “Felicia, what time are you coming home today?”

Felicia hesitated, then said, “Ava, I’ll be staying here for a while.”

Ava went quiet for a moment. “Is something wrong?”

Felicia kept her voice calm. “Miranda wants me to stay here and rest while I’m pregnant.”

Ava got it instantly and didn’t push for more. “Are you still going to yoga today?”

“Yeah, I booked a slot from six to eight.”

“Alright, do you want me to come early? I can bring dinner.”

“That would be great. Thank you.”

They hung up. Felicia checked the time and realized she had just enough for a quick nap before heading out.

After her nap, as she was getting ready, she ran into Max coming down the stairs.

She looked at him. “Heading out?”

Max glanced at her with his usual cool, unreadable expression. “What is it?”

Felicia was used to him by now and didn’t bother hoping for more. “I need to go out too. My car’s at my parents’ place. Can you drop me at the subway?”

Twenty minutes later, Felicia got out of his car and caught the subway downtown.

Ava agreed right away. “He’s right. You’re getting bigger every day. It’s safer to have a driver.”

Felicia didn’t argue. It was just for a couple of months anyway. “Alright, but find someone reliable. Pay him well.”

By the time she got home, it was already nine. Max still wasn’t back.

Marian and Amaris still seemed a bit cold, but they weren’t nearly as harsh as before. They even brought her a cup of milk to her room.

After washing up, Felicia got into bed and picked up a book on prenatal care. She read a story out loud to her baby, talking to her softly. These quiet moments were precious. She knew there wouldn’t be many chances to talk to her child like this. The thought of leaving her baby with the Hawthornes made her heart ache in a way she couldn’t put into words.

Her little baby seemed to pick up on her feelings. Whenever Felicia’s emotions spiked, the baby would give her a gentle kick, almost like she was trying to comfort her.

After a while, Felicia settled in for the night. She’d been feeling better lately, and she slept soundly. Even though her belly was getting bigger, her baby was gentle and never kept her awake. She was sure she’d be a wonderful child.

Max didn’t come home that night.
