He honestly couldn't stand being in the same house with her anymore. But Felicia had stopped caring about that.
That day, she reached out to Savannah to check in. She’d meant to visit her at the hospital yesterday, but it just hadn’t worked out.
“It’s nothing serious. Once this last IV finishes, I can go home,” Savannah said.
Her stomach had acted up badly, so she’d needed two days of fluids. Felicia decided she’d go see her.
Right then, Greg called. He’d found her a driver, someone who’d just left the military last year. Driving cars wouldn’t be an issue for him. Greg sent her the driver’s contact info.
Felicia called right away. The driver was still at Greg’s office and would have to swing by Highfield Manor to pick up the car, so he’d need about an hour.
“Just let me know half an hour before you get here,” she told him. That way, she could take her time walking out, treat it like a walk to clear her head.
He agreed.
At ten thirty, Felicia headed to the front gate. The car pulled up just as she arrived. The driver stepped out and walked over. He was tall, maybe six feet, with a close-cropped haircut, strong jaw, and perfect posture. He looked like he’d just stepped out of basic training, all confidence and quiet strength.
Felicia got in. The driver handed her his info.
“Ms. Ross, here’s my file,” he said.
She scanned it. His name was Dean, twenty-eight years old, in the army since he was eighteen. Greg had set this up, so she trusted it was fine.
“How much is my brother paying you?” she asked.
“Twenty thousand,” Dean replied.
“You know I only need you for a while, right?”
He nodded. “Yes, I know.”
“Where are you staying now?”
“Pine Street. Takes around forty minutes to get here by car.”
“Are you renting?”
Darin hurried over to them.
“Let me,” he offered.
Andrea clung tighter. Max didn’t let go either.
“Let’s get in the car first.”
Darin gave up and stepped aside. Max carried Andrea toward the exit. When he passed Felicia, he didn’t even look at her. He walked by like she was just some stranger in his way.
Felicia told herself she didn’t expect anything from him anymore, but the moment still burned. She felt a wave of humiliation wash over her.
Darin caught the flash of hurt on her face.
Felicia quickly pulled herself together, took a deep breath, and headed for the elevators.
Darin stood there for a moment as she walked by, silent, before turning and heading out himself.
