When Felicia walked into Savannah’s hospital room, she was calm again, collected and steady.
“Felicia! You really didn’t need to bring anything,” Savannah said, glancing at the basket in Felicia’s hands.
Felicia set the fruit on the coffee table and nodded at the IV bag still hanging beside the bed. “Is there more after this one?”
Savannah shook her head. “Just this last bit.”
“Seriously, you can’t go drinking like you did the other night anymore.”
Savannah gave a rueful smile. “Sometimes, when you’re feeling low, you just need something to let it out. I’ll watch myself, promise.”
Just as the IV finished, Jeremy arrived. The three of them went out for lunch at a little restaurant near the hospital, sticking to light dishes.
Felicia mentioned running into Mr. Gilbert at the university recently.
Jeremy smiled. “Mr. Gilbert visits campus all the time. He says being around the students makes him feel young again.”
Savannah looked surprised. “Wait, Felicia, you know Mr. Gilbert?”
Nate had retired a couple of years after mentoring Jeremy.
“When I was Felicia’s mentor, Mr. Gilbert was really impressed with her,” Jeremy said. “After he retired, he even tutored her privately, took her to conferences, helped her see the world.”
Jeremy had told Savannah about Felicia’s double major in math and finance, her international awards, but nothing had shocked her like hearing about Mr. Gilbert’s private lessons.
“Felicia, you are so amazing! Mr. Gilbert even gave you one-on-one lessons?”
Everyone knew Mr. Gilbert was the toughest professor. All his students were stars, but it usually took them five or six years to get through his program. Only geniuses like Jeremy managed to finish early.
And Felicia had the honor of being his private student after he retired.
Felicia just felt embarrassed. Looking at where she was now, her past achievements felt pointless.
Savannah scoffed, “Max must be blind. He couldn’t recognize a treasure if it bit him. He deserves to be stuck with trash.”
Savannah studied Felicia’s face and grinned. “Felicia, once you have the baby and get back in shape, and maybe get a little touch-up on your nose, you’re going to be a total knockout. You’ll blind a certain someone with your glow-up.”
Felicia instinctively touched her nose. Back before she got sick, her nose had been perfect, just the right shape.
She remembered a fall in her first year of high school, taking pictures with friends under the trees. A photographer had snapped a candid profile shot and posted it online, along with a short video. It went viral overnight. Someone from an agency even reached out, offering her a shot at acting.
Her dad sent a legal notice. The photographer apologized and took everything down. Felicia never cared about fame, so the buzz faded pretty fast.
Still, for a while, kids from other schools came just to see her. And Luke, of course, had made himself her unofficial bodyguard.
Later, after she got sick, her nose swelled and her looks took a hit. Before starting at BlueMarble Investments, she’d even tried some cosmetic treatments.
Now, with the pregnancy hormones, her nose looked even bigger.
Felicia laughed softly. “Guess I’ll have to wait until I have the baby first.”
