Darin stood there, watching Felicia walk away. He looked completely lost, like he didn’t know where to go or what to do next.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. He took it out, glanced at the screen, then stepped out of the kitchen to take the call.

He barely got a word out before a loud crash echoed from behind him.

Darin’s whole demeanor changed. He hung up immediately and hurried back inside.

One of the maids was sprawled on the floor, a puddle of steaming water spreading across the tiles. Felicia stood by the counter, gripping the edge, her face pale with shock.

Darin rushed over, his voice tight. “Felicia!” He didn’t even think before calling her name.

She blinked, snapping out of her daze.

He stopped right in front of her, eyes scanning her up and down. “Are you okay? Did you get hurt?”

Felicia just stared at him, her eyes searching his face. She didn’t say a word.

Darin shifted his gaze, clearly uncomfortable under her scrutiny. He checked her for any signs of injury. Her clothes were dry, but the back of her hand was red from the hot water. Relief washed over him.

The maid had apparently slipped while carrying a basin of boiling water. It had almost splashed all over Felicia, but she’d moved quickly enough to avoid it, catching just a bit on her hand.

Another maid hurried over to help the one who’d fallen. The clumsy maid apologized over and over, her voice shaking.

Darin finally looked at her, his expression icy. The maid flinched, shrinking back.

“What happened?” Sydney’s voice cut through the tension as she walked in.

One of the maids quickly explained. Sydney’s face turned stormy. She glared at the maid who’d slipped and said, “Take her downstairs.”

Then she turned to Felicia, her tone softening. “Are you all right?”

Felicia shook her head. “I’m fine.”
