The next morning, Felicia got a call from Miranda, asking her to come by the family estate. She didn’t really have a choice, so she agreed. Around eleven, Greg drove her over. He parked outside the main gate and turned off the engine.

Luke had stayed at the estate the night before. He knew Felicia was coming, so he was already waiting outside when they arrived. Spotting Greg, he walked over to say hello.

“Felicia, you and Luke go ahead inside,” Greg said.

Felicia nodded. “Okay.”

Luke glanced at Greg. “Since you’re here, Greg, why don’t you come in too?”

Greg shook his head. “It’s fine. You go ahead with Felicia.”

Honestly, the Hawthorne family had never invited anyone from the Ross family to their gatherings. Greg knew if he went in, it would just make things uncomfortable for everyone. Luke didn’t push any further. “I’ll make sure Felicia’s alright. I’ll drive her back when we’re done.”

“Alright.”

Just then, a Bentley pulled up and rolled into the estate. Felicia recognized it right away. It was Max’s car.

“Let’s go,” Luke said.

The two of them headed inside. Felicia was heavily pregnant now. Her belly was obvious, and it looked like her due date was just around the corner. She moved slowly, one hand on her back and the other cradling her stomach. Walking with Luke, chatting quietly as they crossed the courtyard, made the trip feel a little less exhausting.

They finally made it into the main hall. Miranda and Tatiana were already sitting in the living room. Max wasn’t there.

Felicia walked over. “Grandma.” Her eyes landed on Tatiana and she hesitated for a moment before adding quietly, “Mom.”

Tatiana shot her a cold look and said nothing.

“Max, don’t you think you’re being too harsh?”

Max’s eyes were dark and intense, as if he could see right through Luke. He stared at him for a second, then asked, “You are into her?”

Luke froze for a moment. Of course Max would notice. There was no hiding anything from him. Luke turned away, looking out the window. He didn’t bother denying it.

“Yeah. We’ve known each other since middle school. I’ve been in love with her for a long time. Maybe you think she’s not beautiful enough for you, but Felicia used to be gorgeous. Honestly, Andrea isn’t even a tenth as pretty as Felicia was. And Felicia’s looks were the least of what made her special.”

Max listened quietly, his face unreadable.

“My mom told me Felicia drugged you… that’s how she got pregnant.” Luke let out a short, bitter laugh. “I don’t believe that for a second. No matter how much she liked you, Felicia would never do something like that.”

He turned to look at Max’s impassive face. “It’s not my place to judge you, Max. But don’t you think, as a man, you should at least show your pregnant wife some basic respect?”
