Max stepped up and gave him a quick pat on the shoulder. “Trust me, when you get married someday, you’ll be a way better husband than I ever was.” He dropped his hand and walked off toward the lounge without another word.

Luke just stood there, staring after him.

It wasn’t until lunchtime that Felicia finally saw Max. The whole family gathered around the dining table. As they ate, Miranda brought up the hospital. She told Max to take Felicia in for a full checkup first thing in the morning. With the due date coming up, it was time to get everything ready.

Max didn’t argue. He just said, “Okay.”

Felicia was caught off guard, but honestly, she kind of wished he’d refused. At this point, she had no idea how to deal with Max. The last thing she wanted was to be alone with him, but it wasn’t like she had a choice.

She ended up spending the whole day at the estate with Luke. They played a few games, wandered around the courtyard, and soaked up the afternoon sun on the big lawn out back. The winter sun was soft and warm, making everything feel a little less heavy.

Luke showed up with a soccer ball and grinned. “Come on, play with me.”

Felicia shot him an epic eye roll. “Are you seriously?”

He nudged the ball to her feet. “Just kick it back to me,” he said, still smiling. Felicia looked down and realized she couldn’t even see the ball over her belly. Luke cracked up, laughing so hard he nearly doubled over.

Felicia glared at him, tempted to just kick the ball straight into his face, but she settled for a half-hearted pass. Up on the third floor, in front of the huge bedroom window that looked out over the lawn, a handsome man stood watching them. He didn’t say a word, just stared as they played.

Ava came over, set out Felicia’s slippers, and helped her back to the bedroom. “Hot water’s ready. Go relax in the bath.”

“Thanks,” Felicia said.

Inside the room, Felicia handed Ava a shopping bag. “This is from Miranda. A wedding gift for you and Dad.”

Miranda had asked her a couple of pointed questions earlier. Felicia knew exactly what had upset her. It wasn’t just that she hadn’t shown up yesterday, it was about respect. She could have skipped the event, but skipping the proper etiquette? That’s what the family really cared about.
