Felicia had no plans to go out. If the sun was shining, she’d wander down by the lake for a little while, but most days she stayed inside, curled up with a book.
Ava couldn’t get home these days, so she and Colton kept in touch with long phone calls. The whole Brightfield Digital acquisition was almost done now. Colton finally had some time to relax, but Greg was busier than ever, out early and home late. Greg’s company had just struck a deal with Luke’s, and Roen Capital had officially signed on to invest. Everything was looking up.
Of course, sooner or later, the conversation circled back to Felicia and Max. Colton felt uneasy. And Ava couldn’t hold back her frustration.
“We’re just ordinary people, Colton. I guess we’ll never be good enough for them. Sometimes it feels like Felicia isn’t even carrying a Hawthorne baby. Once this is over, I want us to pay Max back every cent, with interest. I don’t want anyone saying we took advantage of them.”
Colton agreed. He’d already planned to repay Max as soon as the money from the sale came in and after the divorce was finalized. But Greg’s company needed investment right now, and Colton really believed in it, especially since Roen Capital was backing it too. So, he decided to put the money into Greg’s business first. He’d pay Max back later, every penny, with interest. He wasn’t going to forget what they owed.
“I just feel bad for Felicia’s baby,” Ava said quietly.
Neither of them knew what to say after that, and the line went silent.
That evening, Max actually came home for dinner, which was rare. The only sounds in the dining room were the soft clinks of silverware. Neither he nor Felicia spoke.
When Max finished, he got up and left without a word. Felicia finished her meal and went back to her room. She hesitated, then decided to talk to him about the divorce.
She’d already made plans with Jeremy. She was leaving for the States in early March. The baby would be born by mid month, at the latest. Once the divorce papers were signed and the one month processing period was over, she could get the final certificate and leave. That would give her about a month with her baby.
Max was in the study. Felicia knocked on the door. She heard him answer, so she opened it and stepped inside.
At the doorway, she paused, steadying herself against the frame, then continued down the hall.
Max watched her go until she disappeared, then looked away.
Somewhere else, in a fancy villa, Darin came home and Yvonne called him into her room. Darin seemed to know what she wanted to talk about. He watched her, his face unreadable, waiting for her to say something.
Yvonne looked at her son and sighed. “I’m not trying to stand in your way, Darin. It’s just... it’s been over ten years. It’s time to let go. We all have our own lives now. There’s no need to keep crossing paths.”
A couple days ago, Darin had driven past the old neighborhood. He couldn’t help himself. He stopped in front of the old house, just in time to see the new owner stepping out.
