As the clock neared ten, Lily's favorite indie band finally took the stage for their headline set.

The crowd absolutely lost their minds. Thousands of people surged forward, jumping onto chairs and screaming, turning the venue into a chaotic mosh pit.

Lily was instantly swallowed by a solid wall of towering adults, completely blocking her view of the stage.

Just as she started to panic, Denis dropped into a low squat and patted his broad shoulders. "Lily, climb up! I'll put you on my shoulders!"

Lily gaped at him in horror. "No way! I'm way too heavy!"

She had just hit a major growth spurt, getting taller and naturally heavier.

"You weigh like eighty pounds. Stop being weird and get up here!" Denis ordered.

"Seriously, I'm fine, Denis. I can just listen from down here."

Lily bickered and fought with Denis constantly. Their fiery personalities clashed daily, making them practically feral around each other.

But when it came to basic boundaries, Lily still had a sense of decorum.

She couldn't straddle Denis's shoulders!

"If you don't climb up, I'm just going to pick you up bridal style!" Denis threatened, before turning to his mom. "Mom, grab her legs and help her up."

Ivy watched her aggressively oblivious second son, her chest tightening with an incredibly complicated mix of emotions.

The crowd in front of them was being ridiculous, standing on their folding chairs and ruining the view for everyone behind them.

She and Lily truly couldn't see a single thing.

So, Ivy pulled Lily closer, gently urging her. "Go ahead, Lily. Let Denis lift you up."

"Aunt Ivy, I—"

Before Lily could even protest, Denis grabbed her by the legs and hoisted her forcefully onto his massive shoulders.

"Denis! Wait—ah!"

Lily had no choice but to grab on for dear life as she was violently thrown into the air.

When Denis stood up, she shrieked in terror, her thighs clamping tightly around his neck to keep from falling backward.

Denis gripped her hands securely, shouting over the music to calm her down. "I've got you! I won't let you fall!"

Perched high on his shoulders, Lily suddenly had an unobstructed, panoramic view of the entire stage.

As her favorite singer belted out the chorus, the sheer thrill of the concert washed away her embarrassment. She started screaming the lyrics, leaning down to wildly share her excitement with Denis.

Standing off to the side, Ivy watched her son act like an utterly devoted guard dog. The subtle dread that had been haunting her for months suddenly surfaced again.
