"I believed her. We didn't use any protection that night, and to be honest that really pissed me off. It wasn't like we were both f@cked up. She was in her right mind, she knew exactly what she was doing.
"Angela's excuse was that she had a couple of drinks in her too, but it didn't even matter at that point. What was done was done. But that's why I was going to marry her, Sky. She convinced me it was the right thing to do, mostly because she was terrified at how your family would react."
"She didn't look pregnant." My voice came out in a whisper, I was afraid that if it got any louder it would crack and I would begin to cry. I didn't want to cry.
"She had a miscarriage a few months into it." He confessed.
"Why did you continue with the wedding then?" I snapped. I didn't fully believe his story. Angela couldn't get away with something like that, she was weak minded and absolutely terrified of her parents. I was the one who came up with the schemes that would get us in trouble, she just followed along.
"Guilt." Was his answer. "She was really depressed when she lost the baby and I'd look like a dick if I dumped her."
"Well you dumping her at the alter was a great alternative. She's lost it Nick. Did you hear about how she attacked me. Security came down and everything."
"Yeah I heard something about that." We walked in silence for a while. It was cold.
"What you did the other day," I shook my head. "That wasn't okay."
"I know and I'm sorry. I wasn't in my right mind." He sighed. "I want you back though. I love you, I've always loved you. You know that. I made a few mistakes but it's nothing that we can't work through."
"I'm with someone." I said quietly. Was it weird that it pained me to see him in pain?
Nick groaned. "The guy who choked me? What do you see in him?"
"You rather me be with the guy who tried to rape me?" Ouch Sky, that was cold.
"Do you even know anything about his past, or about his family? Do you even know him?" His gaze didn't waver.
"I know what I need to know." Why did I feel compelled to defend Dante?
"He can't erase the past Skyla. It's all gonna follow him, and those people who he wants nothing to do with," Nick shook his head. "That doesn't mean that they disappear. He still and always will have a dark cloud hanging over him. If you stay you'll end up having one of your own. This isn't me trying to win you back either. It's just the truth. I'm no better than any of them."
"That's right! You aren't." I yelled. "You tell me how horrible his father is and all of that dark cloud bullshit but Nick, you're the same."
"I know, Skyla! I know." He was frowning at me.
"Then why the hell are you going through all of the motions?" I asked. "Why bother give me your side of the story? I don't care about any of that shit anymore. I've moved on, Nick and I'm happy. Don't try to taint it with your whole mafia talk because that is what your getting at, isn't it? You can't straight out say it, but that's what you're trying to tell me." I was so close to tears.
