Linton easily caught the pillow she threw. He plucked a few of her hairs from it, tossed them in the trash, and then carefully handed it back to her. His voice, usually as cool and crisp as snow, was incredibly hoarse.
"Liliana, you're awake?"
"Wait for me, I'll go bring your breakfast up."
Linton chattered on, lost in his own world, as he described the meal. "Darling, I made Oatmeal and Frittata this morning, and I also made a red bean pudding for you."
He paused, a gentle smile forming on his lips as he gazed at her with deep affection, his voice raspy and reluctant.
"Start the day with something sweet, and the whole day will be filled with good fortune."
There was some truth to that.
Sweet foods could indeed stimulate dopamine and improve one's mood.
Liliana looked at him calmly, her gaze fixed on him for a long moment before she stated, out of the blue, "You've been crying."
It was a statement, not a question.
...
He forced a smile, a glutton for his own punishment. He leaned in, trying to coax her with a shameless grin. "Does that make your heart ache for me?"
"Why don't you comfort me? If you do, it won't hurt anymore."
Liliana slowly lowered her gaze, not looking at him again as she said coldly, "Stay away from me. Get lost."
As if that wasn't enough, she added a layer of mocking scorn to her tone. "Feel sorry for you? I'd rather feel sorry for a dog. At least a dog has value. What value do you have?"
"I'm not used to you being like this. Can you please be a little more normal? You're scaring me."
Linton quickly tried to soothe her. "Darling, don't be scared. I'm still me, aren't I?"
Liliana choked on her words, looking down as she muttered under her breath, "You weren't like this before..."
Linton's eyes darkened. Seizing the opportunity, he leaned in and kissed her small, soft white earlobe, his voice a husky whisper. "Darling, what's different?"
With a deadpan expression, Liliana raised her hand and slapped him hard across the face, sending his head snapping to the side. Her lips curled in disdain. "I was overthinking it. You haven't changed at all. You're just as shameless as ever."
Linton didn't get angry at being slapped. He just grinned and leaned in again, murmuring, "Come on, darling. You know you like it when I'm shameless."
That was the last straw for Liliana. Her beautiful eyes widened in fury as she bit out, "Who likes it? Who did you say likes it? You bastard, make yourself clear!"
