Linton sat in the car, clutching the stuffed rabbit, his handsome face soured as if he’d just bitten into a lemon. The tartness made his teeth ache.

He had no idea when this ordeal would ever end.

Lucas, dutifully helping him load baby supplies into the car, finally couldn't hold back anymore.

"Mr. Cooper, if you'll listen to a word of advice..."

"Maybe buy a little less from now on!"

Just stop! He really couldn't carry any more!

What was all this for, anyway?

Lucas stood outside the car, rubbing his sore arms, feeling like he wanted to cry but couldn't.

Linton slowly lifted his gaze to him, his thin, sensual lips parting slightly. "I'll give you a raise," he said coldly.

"An extra week of vacation over the holidays, at triple pay."

“...”

Instantly, he snapped a respectful salute, his expression dead serious. "Mr. Cooper, please, I insist you buy more. I can still carry it all!"

Linton couldn't be bothered with his sycophantic fawning.

He lowered his gaze and grabbed a handful of fur on the stuffed rabbit's head, yanking at it in frustration until it was a mess. He hesitated for a moment before asking in a low voice.

"What do you think Liliana is thinking right now?"

Lucas started, pointing a finger at his own nose. "Huh? Me?"

Linton shot him a cold glare, his expression darkening. "Answer poorly and your year-end bonus is gone."

Lucas froze, on the verge of tears.

Seriously, he was just an executive assistant.

What had he ever done to deserve this?

Feeling the immense pressure of Linton’s stare, Lucas frowned and thought for a long while before hesitantly stammering out an answer.

He opened his mouth, at a loss for words. "Ah, no, that's not exactly what I meant..."

He paused, noticing Linton's gaze turn sharp and cold, and quickly added.

"I mean, of course your cooking is delicious, Mr. Cooper. But for Miss Hart to be willing to eat it, even though she despises you so much, what does that signify?"

"Doesn't it suggest that... after all this time together, her heart has softened, that she's showing signs of wanting to forgive you?"

At those words, Linton lowered his dark lashes, silently plucking at the rabbit's fur again as he pursed his lips.

His face hardened. He lifted his eyes and said coldly, "I think you're dreaming."

Believing Liliana would forgive him was about as likely as believing he could build a rocket and fly to the moon. Actually, the rocket seemed more probable; at least he had the money for that.

But then again...

Linton’s heart began to pound violently, a frantic drumming that felt like it would burst from his chest.

He lowered his gaze thoughtfully, a flickering light in his dark eyes, and couldn't stop a spark of joyful fantasy from taking root in his heart.
