Logan let out a huge sigh of relief. He patted his little chest with a soft hand. *Whew, that's good.* He had been so scared that Sister Liliana had separated from Uncle Linton because of him. If his grandma had found out, she would have definitely disciplined him again! But it was okay now. Sister Liliana said so herself!

He was an easy child to soothe, his mind not yet cluttered with complex worries. Cradling the fluffy rabbit, he took a bite of his strawberry jelly. As he chewed, he looked up at Liliana curiously, his big eyes blinking. "Then... then why did you and Uncle Linton separate, Sister Liliana? Don't you like him anymore?"

Liliana's eyelid twitched. For a little kid, he asked some sharp questions.

She thought for a moment, then smiled and patted his head. "Because he's an animal."

Logan's chewing paused. He looked up at her, completely bewildered. "Oh," he said after a moment, his voice full of childish sincerity. "I get it, Sister Liliana. Is Uncle Linton a dog?"

"Pfft!" Liliana nearly choked. She covered her mouth with her hand, her shoulders shaking with suppressed laughter. "Yes," she managed to say. "He's a dog. A big, stinky dog."

"She's just stubborn," Linton said, his tall frame leaning casually against a railing. He was wearing a black wool coat, and his sharp, handsome features were alight with a pride he couldn't contain.

"See? What did I tell you?" Linton's cool voice was husky with satisfaction as he boasted. "She always says the opposite of what she means. With Liliana, you have to listen to half of what she says and assume the opposite for the other half. If you take her at her word, you're walking right into her trap. Then, when things don't go her way, the little miss gets angry all over again. She's a handful."

He was incredibly pleased with himself, rambling on to the man in front of him, sharing the wisdom he'd accumulated over twenty years of dealing with Liliana. He lowered his gaze, the shadows hiding the deep affection in his eyes, a nostalgic smile touching his lips as he got lost in a memory.
