Liliana bristled at his condescending tone. She tilted her head to dodge his hand, pouting as she complained, "Gabriel, I'll be 25 after the New Year. I'm about to be a mother."

"Can you please stop treating me like a kid? I'm an adult now. I'm not the same as before!"

Gabriel found this amusing.

He simply pulled Liliana closer and ruffled her hair again, more forcefully this time. "Even if you're 75," he said with a raised eyebrow, "you'll always be a little kid in my eyes."

Liliana was at a loss for words.

She bared her teeth, her hair almost standing on end from the rough patting.

If it weren't for her pregnant belly, she would have kicked him right then and there.

At midnight, Gabriel came back inside after setting off the last round of electronic noisemakers. He saw Mrs. Hart preparing to take a bowl of dumplings upstairs.

Linton was being quite considerate.

After dinner, once he finished cleaning the kitchen, he had quietly gone upstairs and shut himself in the guest room, staying out of sight and out of mind.

Mrs. Hart couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy for him. She had called him down for dumplings, but he had refused. So, she decided to bring a bowl up to him herself. It was a holiday tradition, after all.

Gabriel took the bowl from her, the chill of the outside air still clinging to him. "Let me do it, Mom," he said coolly. "You go get some rest."

Mrs. Hart didn't argue. "Alright, Gabriel. When you go up, try to talk to Linton."

"I know he's going through a hard time too… but, well, no matter what, he's staying with us for the holiday. And he's been running himself ragged these past few weeks, worrying about Liliana's delivery."

"It just… it doesn't sit right with me. Go talk to him, tell him he doesn't need to be so anxious. We've known each other for so many years, we know each other's history. It's not like we have to be enemies…"

"Okay, Mom, I know," Gabriel said.

"Don't worry about it too much. They both have their issues right now. Let them think things through on their own. At this point, nothing anyone else says will help."
