Gabriel didn’t say a name, but Liliana knew exactly who he meant.
She lowered her lashes, her voice a little cooler. “I have no interest in being a grieving widow, Gabriel. I just don’t want to be in a relationship. I want to focus on taking care of Amelia.”
“I have money, I don’t need a man for emotional support, and I certainly don’t need one to do things for me.”
“Is that so?” Gabriel countered. “Should I leave, then?”
Liliana had no comeback for that.
She forced a smile. This conversation was going nowhere.
“Mommy!”
Suddenly, a sweet, childish voice called out from behind her.
Liliana paused and turned to see Amelia Hart, dressed in a fluffy, light pink princess dress, toddling towards her with a huge smile.
The little girl ran, shouting, “Mo-mommy! Up!”
Liliana quickly set her champagne glass on a table and knelt down, a warm smile on her face as she scooped Amelia into her arms.
The three-year-old still had her baby fat, and while she wasn’t a chubby child, she was getting heavy.
Liliana lifted her with a bit of effort and said softly, “Are you bored, Amelia? Do you want Mommy to take you home now?”
Amelia Hart shook her little head, hugged Liliana’s neck, and planted a loud kiss on her cheek. “No, Mommy,” she said in her milky voice. “I want to be with you for your birthday!”
“Happy birthday, Mommy! Amelia loves you forever!”
Amelia could be a crybaby, but when she wasn’t crying, she was the sweetest little girl, warming Liliana’s heart like a ray of sunshine.
Liliana’s eyes curved into crescents as she smiled. She turned, intending to carry her daughter over to get some dessert.
“Mommy,” Amelia said, looking around as if searching for someone. Her big, innocent eyes were wide and dewy as she swung her little legs. “Is the mysterious uncle going to send you a present again this year for your birthday?”
