Amelia Hart blinked her big, dark, round eyes. “I don’t have a daddy, mister,” she said innocently.
The man froze. His striking eyes widened for a moment before turning red, and a hint of moisture seemed to cloud his gaze, betraying a deep ache.
His throat tightened, and his voice was hoarse when he spoke. “Amelia, then… you’re not…” Sad about it? he wanted to ask.
He hesitated, ultimately deciding against asking. Instead, he forced a gentle smile and gave her a light nudge. “You should go to the restroom. I’ll wait out here for you.”
Amelia Hart nodded, not quite understanding. “Okay! You have to wait for me, mister,” she chirped. “I can take you to my mommy! She’ll thank you, I promise.”
Amelia had wanted to invite the man to her mom’s birthday party as a thank-you.
But she was in a hurry, her little face turning red as she held it in. Her stubby legs pattered across the floor as she rushed toward the restroom, forgetting everything else.
The man watched her go in silence, his dark eyes growing deeper. He remained squatting for a long time before slowly standing up to make a call.
After comfortably using the restroom, Amelia dutifully stood on her tiptoes to wash her hands at the low sink designed for children.
When she excitedly ran back out to find the strange man, she discovered he was already gone.
Lucas was standing there waiting for her.
He hurried over and knelt, taking her hand. “Amelia, why didn’t you tell an adult you were going to the restroom? Your mother was worried sick when she couldn’t find you.”
“Come on, Mr. Grant will take you back to the party.”
Amelia paused, blinking her bright, dark eyes in confusion. “Mr. Grant, are you the only one here?” she asked in her sweet, child-like voice. “Did you see a man wearing all black?”
Lucas looked puzzled. “There was no one else here when I arrived, Amelia,” he said gently. “Now, don’t worry about it. Mr. Grant will take you back.”
