Epilogue: Sophia's Confession

My name is Sophia, and I'm a madwoman.

I've spent my life pretending to be the perfect daughter—well-mannered, graceful, and genteel. I've managed to deceive everyone, but not myself.

From a young age, I felt out of place in this family.

My sister Emily was my mother's favorite. I was always expected to give way to her, no matter the circumstances.

Emily wanted everything I had. Even if she had no use for it, she didn't want me to have it.

In elementary school, our neighbors gave us a dog. It was adorable, and spending time with it was the happiest I'd ever been.

But someone was always intent on robbing me of that joy. Emily told our mother she disliked the dog and wanted it removed.

My mother, who couldn't bear seeing me happy, agreed. She said my happiness reminded her of Emily's time in the incubator, so they decided to get rid of the dog.

After a long and desperate plea, they agreed to return the dog to the neighbors, claiming I was allergic as an excuse.
