When Adrian finally got through, Anneliese was drawing with Ellie.

Her phone rang. Anneliese saw an unfamiliar number and hung up right away. The phone rang again almost immediately.

She frowned slightly. At that moment, Ellie glanced at the screen and suddenly tugged on Anneliese's sleeve.

Anneliese looked at her in question. Ellie moved her small mouth and silently formed a word.

The little girl clearly wanted to speak and tell her that the number was her grandpa's, just like how she had suddenly managed to make a sound earlier.

His voice sounded low and carried pressure.

Anneliese had first thought that Adrian was calling because he knew Ellie was with her. She thought he wanted to ask about his granddaughter or talk about picking her up.

Now he didn't mention Ellie at all. He said he wanted to confirm something. Anneliese immediately thought of the rumors.

Could he have heard them and wanted to ask about that?

She fell silent for a moment. Adrian took her silence as agreement.

Anneliese felt completely speechless. She rolled her eyes.

"Explain? Why should I explain anything? Why don't you go ask the people who started the rumors why they did it? Let them explain it to me. This is ridiculous."

She said it bluntly. She could hear Adrian's breathing grow heavier with anger, so she spoke again.

"If you have nothing else, I'm going back to draw with Ellie…"

She hadn't finished her sentence when someone took the phone from behind her.

Anneliese turned around in surprise. She saw that Jonathan had come out of the study at some point. He stood behind her and held the phone to his ear.

His voice sounded low and carried the same kind of authority. "Mr. Malone, my wife kindly agreed to your family's request and spent her time taking care of Ellie. Because of that, people spread rumors that she had a child as a minor. Instead of stopping those rumors, you're questioning my wife. How is that reasonable?"

Adrian felt awkward when he heard this.

He thought about how Ellie still needed Anneliese's care and help. He cleared his throat. He could understand why Jonathan was upset as her husband.

"Jonathan, this was my fault. I acted too fast. Since things aren't like the rumors say, don't worry. I'll have someone check where the rumors came from right away. I'll give you a proper answer."
