"Why would they do that? I have to know if he's safe! I... I love him!" I gasped at my own words. I froze in the Luna's arms.
I didn't mean to say the last part. It just kinda slipped out. In my rut of hopelessness I guess my heart realized I loved him. Those three simple words, that could change my life. And I let them slip by accident.
I loved him.
"I know darling..." Sally whispered. She knew! She pulled me back to look at me. She gently reached up and rubbed away my tears. "Please stop crying honey." She whispered, rubbing my hair out of my face.
"How?" I blubbered.
"I've never seen anyone's eyes shine so brightly when he walks into the room. Even just saying his name your whole face lights up..." She still held me strong in her hands, smiling at me. It didn't quite reach her eyes, but I could tell she was genuinely happy for me. "You're good for him Lexi."
I nodded my head, a thin smile momentarily passed my lips. I drew in a few shaky breaths trying to get ahold of myself.
I glanced back at Connor's unmoving form. His poor parents.
"They have to be okay. He's all I have Sally...." I whisper, almost as if I say it too loud it'll jinx itself. I turn, looking back to her.
"You'll always have me darling. I promise to never leave you." I hugged her again, and smiled at her.
"Thank you..."
"Come on darling, let's get you some tea. And we can sit down and talk." She led me to the kitchen, I followed without protest. I didn't want to be in the room with Connor anymore. It was too hard.
I sat down at the kitchen table while Sally bustled around the kitchen gracefully.
"Here." She sat down a steaming cup of tea right in front of me.
"How are you so calm?" I asked as I sipped the tea.
"We'll that's the first I've heard of this!" I laugh lightly. Whatever! They could care less what I thought. The kids? Maybe. I do love the children here. But no one else is under my control by any means.
"We'll they all-" Sally was cut off by the front door being thrown open. Three men were carrying someone over there shoulders. As they sat him down on the sofa opposite of Connor, and I finally saw his face. I shoved away from the table quickly.
"Chase!" I screamed running over. "Is he okay?" I demanded from one of the men. I dropped to the floor next to him, grabbing his hand with my two.
"He was hit by an arrow in his chest. It wasn't silver though, he should be alright." My tears leaked, as I clutched onto Chase. "We ran the hunters off again. But we didn't kill them all. I'm so sorry." The same man told me. Sally walked up to us. "Where's my husband?" She asked worried. I could see in her face all the fear she had been hiding. My heart stopped for a minute, scared for her.
"Ma'am he was shot in the heart." He paused seeing her tears. "He didn't make it..." He looked down. I could tell he was ashamed he had let his Alpha and Luna down. But it wasn't his fault. War is war. No one can be blamed.
"No... NO!" She cried. Her screams awoke some of the pack members. One of the other women came and carried her away to her room. I watched helplessly. I was torn between comforting her or staying by Chase's side.
"I'm so sorry, the Alpha and Beta always fight hardest." The man told me, referring to Connor, Chase's would be Beta, and Chase's father. Probably even Chase's current state. I know damn well Chase put up an even harder fight once his father and Beta were injured. I know he did his best to avenge them.
