I got to understand what those buttons were meant for when he pressed one of them and the chains holding Marshall started moving. At a slow pace, it took him up, down, again, the whole time, stretching him really hard.
He eventually came awake with a low pained grunt. The pain must've been unbearable. His arms were stretched high as the machine lifted and dropped him in slow, relentless cycles. It was like a wounded person forced into endless involuntary push-ups.
I had seen countless acts of violence in Blayne's parlor. I had never enjoyed them. I had been traumatized by them more times than I could count.
But for the first time, I didn't really feel disgust as I watched Marshall being tortured. It did something to my wounds.
Leaving Marshall moving that way, he moved to the coffin. I couldn't help but wonder what special horror he had for this one.
As I moved closer to the coffin, I noticed the network of pipes coiled around it like veins.
"One time, you told me about a scene from the Vampire Diaries where one of the characters was trapped in a coffin underwater and kept drowning and drowning." He pressed a button on the table beside the coffin. "Let's just say this was inspired by that story."
Water started filling in from one of the pipes. I watched in astonishment, my heart seeming to race as the water kept going into the coffin.
I looked at Void. How did he have the heart to torture people this way all the time and not feel a thing? And how does he even come up with all these ideas?
A low moan slipped from Mayor as consciousness crawled back into his body. When the water reached his neck, he started writhing and struggling.
His hands were cuffed beside him; so there was nothing he could do other than kick his legs, and that too was useless.
The water eventually covered his face. I watched in both fear and astonishment as he fought aimlessly with the water.
This was Mayor—I reminded myself. The one who tormented you the most. The psychopath who licked your blood and fed it to you. He deserves this, Rali. He had worse plans for you.
He kept choking and struggling. For the first time, I watched someone drown in a horrific way.
When his movements began to weaken, his struggles thinned into sluggish reflexes, Void shut off the water and clicked a button that started draining the coffin. Five more seconds and I was sure Mayor would've died.
"How did that feel?" Void asked, staring me in the face.
For me, my eyes were still glued to the water pouring out of the coffin.
For the first time, I stayed in the room with Marshall and Mayor and didn't feel the need to run or beg.
"Good." I bobbed "It felt good."
.......
Over the next five days, I became a little more relaxed. My greatest demons were under control; nothing could hurt me now.
Well, except Void—the one demon I was still hoping to escape.
This very demon was different from the others. He's been having his way with me—keeping me here against my will, dictating my movements, feeding me my favorite meals.
I'd stopped struggling. Struggling was always useless against someone like Void.
I let him wash my hair in peace, let him bath me, cream me, massage me. I couldn't even deny that the massage part felt good. The monster sure knew how to use his hands.
