At such a critical turning point for a regime change, for a Lycan Prince to skip out on stabilizing the capital and run to the front lines instead was practically a death wish for the country.

But with Pierce gone, Damian had no leash. As acting marshal, he’d gone scorched–earth. launching a series of frenzied attacks.

When Pierce finally returned, only to find the Lycan Prince already in Snowdeer Town, it was clear his attempt at mediation back home had failed.

The flames of war on the front lines had reached a fever pitch, and the news had definitely made its way back to the Western public.

Pierce didn’t want a prolonged conflict while the old Lycan King was dying; the drain on manpower and money was too much. So, upon his return, he ordered a temporary ceasefire.

“That’s why I pitched the plan: I’d lead a squad to sneak into Snowdeer Town and torch their food reserves. Without supplies, it wouldn’t matter how fierce they were–they’d be too hungry to fight. It was supposed to buy us at least two weeks of breathing room.”

Adelaide cut in. “And while you were sneaking into town, had Pierce returned to the field?”

“Yeah, but we only found that out after the fact

“When I led the teain in, Damian was still the on calling the shots on the front.”

“How long did the infiltration take?” Adelaide asked, her fingers tapping a rhythmic, steady beat on the desk.

Ulrik thought for a second. “About seven days. The blizzards were brutal–they masked our scent, but they slowed us down to a crawl.”

“Then tell me,” Adelaide’s voice went cold, “why did you and Velda split up? If the goal was the food reserves, shouldn’t you have kept your force concentrated?”

Ulrik’s eyes shifted, his Adam’s apple bobbing.

“The reserves were guarded by elite fighters. We were terrified of walking into an ambush and getting wiped out.” He paused, finally coming clean.

“So I had her take a squad to scout the perimeter and act as backup…”

“I… I was being selfish. I wanted to protect her.”

Ulrik’s voice dropped, thick with a pain he couldn’t hide.

“She was my mate back then. I didn’t want her on the most dangerous part of the mission. I thought keeping her on the outskirts as a lookout was the ‘safe‘ move. I never, in my wildest dreams, thought she would…”

“I didn’t think she’d slaughter a whole village. I had no idea what was going through her head, and I definitely didn’t know she’d kill civilians.”

“So, you were too busy burning the warehouse to keep an eye on her.”

“Which means, when Velda was butchering those people, you were completely in the dark.”

“And when you went back to the command tent to report, you obviously didn’t mention the atrocity to Alpha Zander.”

Ulrik lifted his head, his wolf eyes dull and glazed over.

“Exactly. How could I report something I didn’t know happened? The blizzard was too heavy that night–it masked the smell of blood. It masked her madness.”

Adelaide took all the pieces–Damian’s ambition, the Lycan Prince’s movements, the warehouse fire, and Velda’s massacre–and fit them together in her mind.

She looked him in the eye for a final confirmation.

“Do you swear on your wolf soul that you had zero knowledge of what Velda was doing behind your back?”
