“Father, that’s not what we meant… It’s just that someone has to answer for those hundreds of lives lost in Snowdeer Town. A blood debt like that needs a fall guy. Why shouldn’t it be me? I was the one who failed to keep a leash on that psycho. It should be my cross to bear.”

Alpha Zander shook his head. He had always lived by the ironclad werewolf code of “bleed, don’t cry,” but in this moment, he let out a heavy sigh.

“This is on me. Every drop of blood spilled in Snowdeer Town is on my hands. It’s my and mine alone.”

Lisa’s heart broke thinking about Adelaide having to navigate the shark–infested waters of capital politics again.

“How did she even survive all that?”

As Lisa sobbed, the other she–wolves at the table were swept up in the grief, and low whimpers filled the room. The air was thick with a mix of sorrow and raw resentment.

Lisa wiped her face aggressively and stood up, her eyes flashing with resolve.

“Alpha Zander! I’m going back with you! Even if I can’t take the fall, I need to see Adelaide. I need to look that Lance guy in the eye and tell him if he ever messes with her, I’ll rip his throat out myself!”

Alpha Zander sighed. He knew her love for Adelaide was real.

“If you want to go… fine,” Zander said slowly. “Go see her. Stay a few days and then come back. But you aren’t coming with me tomorrow. Start your journey a few days later.”
