“Right now, Lycan Erasmus is leaning on his old ties with Alpha Zander and his respect for the man’s years of service. But if that comment actually reaches his ears, all of that goes out the window.”
Lance thought for a moment. “I think Alpha Theodore can pull this off. More importantly, Alfred knows Lycan Erasmus better than anyone. He’s a smart wolf; he’s not going to choose a suicide mission.”
“I hope so. But without any confirmed news, it’s hard not to worry,” Caldwell muttered.
He was a perfectionist–if there was even one loose thread, he couldn’t rest.
Just then, the front door swung open.
Avery ran in, panting for breath. His voice was raspy from spending the whole day at the city gates leading the chants.
“Stop worrying! Alpha Theodore is here in person!”
Theodore had come alone, without a single attendant.
He was wrapped in a thick black wool cloak; if you didn’t catch the glint of authority in his eyes, you’d think he was just a high–ranking pack butler.
Lance and Adelaide stood up immediately to greet him, and the others followed suit.
Everyone felt a deep, genuine gratitude for Theodore’s willingness to jump into the fray without hesitation.
After some quick pleasantries, Theodore got straight to the point.
“Look, I’m sorry. I stopped him, but I couldn’t get the brat to agree for free. He’s got a condition, and I need to check with Adelaide and Paisley first.”
The room held its collective breath at the word “sorry,” only to let it out in a quiet wave of relief at the second half of the sentence.
Paisley pointed a finger at herself, looking confused. “Why me? What does he want? Money?”
Theodore looked a bit awkward and gave a dry cough.
“He wants to be your student. And not just a regular traince–he wants to be your apprentice, just like Ampelio, Ellen, and Anilo.”
“What?” Paisley’s eyes went wide.
“I already teach him! He’s in the guard; he takes my large–group combat classes. Why the special treatment? I already told everyone I’m only taking those three idiots as my official students.”

Theodore explained with a weary sigh, “Alfred is too proud for his own good. He says he wants to rise through the ranks on raw skill. In the Royal Guard, it’s all about combat prowess and being sharp. He’s sharp enough–too sharp, honestly–but his fighting? He’s okay, but he chokes when he goes up against elite killers.”
“Basically, he wants to learn how to actually end a fight.”
Paisley let out a soft “oh” and turned to Adelaide, who was already looking back at her.
This was ultimately Paisley’s call. Taking an apprentice wasn’t a small thing; it meant sharing every secret and being responsible for his actions.
Given her prickly personality, taking on the first three was already a massive favor to Adelaide.
Now, this wasn’t just a request; it felt like a shakedown.
Under normal circumstances, Paisley would have lost her temper and kicked anyone making threats out the door.
But right now, the room was dead silent. Every eye was on her.
Paisley didn’t hesitate for long.
Her voice was calm. “Fine. I’ll do it.”
“If it keeps his mouth shut, I don’t care if I have to train him every day and beat him into a pulp. I’m in.”
When Alpha Zander’s life was on the line, some principles just weren’t worth dying for.
Adelaide looked at her with pure gratitude. “Paisley, thank you.”
“Don’t thank me. I needed someone to clean the weapons in the training hall anyway,” Paisley joked.
Inside, though, she was gritting her teeth. “Nice move, Alfred. You want to use Zander to blackmail me? Just wait until you see the ‘special training‘ I’ve got waiting for you.”
Lance, who had been acting cool the whole time, finally let out a real sigh of relief.
“Alpha Theodore, you’ve done us a massive favor. On behalf of the Blackthorns, thank you.”
“Alpha Lance, please,” Theodore waved him off sincerely.
“Even if you hadn’t saved my son Marsh’s life back then, I wouldn’t let that brat talk trash about a hero like Alpha Zander. I handled this personally; no one else knows we met. You can count on that.”
Lance nodded. “I know you’re thorough. I’m not worried.”
To avoid making Jeremy suspicious, Theodore didn’t stay long and left quickly.
