Third Person’s POV
Alpha Zander sighed, leaning forward to help Adelaide up with his large, weathered hands.
He gently ruffled her hair, exactly the way he used to when she was a little girl.
In that moment, Adelaide’s tears fell like a string of broken pearls, splashing heavily onto the floor.

Zander’s calloused fingers brushed them away, his voice thick with a heartache he couldn’t quite hide, though it trembled as he spoke.
“Who’s bullying you this time? Tell me…”
He paused, a sad smile touching his lips. “I’m getting old, unfortunately. I can’t go out and crack heads for you anymore. But then again… you’re all grown up now. You’re more than capable of settling your own scores.”
The mix of pain and pride in his voice hit Adelaide like a physical blow.
She hurriedly wiped her eyes with the back of her hand.
“No. Stop it. I didn’t come here to cry, and I definitely didn’t come here to show him how weak I am,” she said to herself.
She looked at him through blurred vision. Zander’s eyes were still full of the same devotion, but under the firelight, his age was impossible to ignore.
Whatever she had been through these past few years, her grandfather had endured ten times worse.
Beyond the crushing grief of losing the Shadow Fang Pack, he’d dealt with the agony of Russell losing an arm. And he himself had been riddled with poison, nearly dragging himself back from the gates of death.
Seeing him still sitting tall despite it all filled her with nothing but raw respect and heartache.
Eventually, with Lance’s quiet support, the atmosphere settled enough for them to actually talk.
Zander broke the silence first.
“Lisa will be in the capital in a few days. She insisted on coming; there was no stopping her. She said… she had to see you with her own eyes.”
He didn’t say much else. He was afraid that if he opened the floodgates, the pain he had buried so deep would drown them both.
Adelaide looked worried.
“It’s a long journey, and it’s the dead of winter. Lisa isn’t in the best health–why didn’t you talk her out of it?”
Zander’s voice softened.
“She’s missed you every single day. She stayed away before because she didn’t want to cause trouble for you. But now… now that I’m in this state, under house arrest, she doesn’t care about the consequences anymore. Let her come. It’ll be good for her to see you and Cedric.”

Adelaide fought back fresh tears. “I wanted to bring Cedric tonight. But he’s at the Military Academy, and the rules are strict. I was so desperate to see you that I didn’t wait to pick him up.”
In reality, Adelaide had left Cedric behind on purpose.
Tonight’s visit hadn’t been approved by Lycan Erasmus. Even though the Royal Sentry had let them in, Lycan Erasmus would know about it within the hour.
She didn’t want to risk Cedric’s future if Lycan Erasmus decided to be petty.
She already had a plan. In a few days, she’d go to Lycan Luna Clarissa and use Cedric’s name to request a “special visit.” That way, she could bring him here officially.
She also planned to bring Dr. Digby to check on Zander’s old wounds and deliver high–grade herbs and supplies.
Then, they would sit down together, break bread, and have a real family meal.
It had been far too long.
Her father used to say that one of the most important things a wolf could do was share food with family around a fire.
At the mention of Cedric, Zander’s eyes filled with a visible, aching gratitude.
He knew Lance had moved mountains to find the boy and bring him home. He owed Lance a formal thank–you.
Zander gripped the arms of his chair and slowly pulled himself up.
He reached out and solemnly grasped Lance’s forearm in a warrior’s salute.
“Thank you, Alpha Lance, for bringing Cedric back. I will never forget this debt.”
