“Sybil Rhodes was loyal to the late Crown Prince. After he died, she must’ve been itching for revenge. She probably backs Orion and Damian–she’s a total hawk!”
Lance didn’t waste a second. He turned toward the door.
“Avery, get to the hotel. Tell Adelaide and Paisley to keep a sharp eye on Sybil Rhodes. Also, have them monitor Helia’s health closely.”
Avery gave a quick nod and vanished into the night.
Prunella watched him go and muttered, “I wish we could just bug the hotel and listen in ”
“Don’t get cute,” Klein snapped. “We’re in the middle of sensitive negotiations. If they catch us wiretapping, they’ll have another piece of leverage to use against us.”
Inside the hotel, Adelaide kept pressing Eva for info on who in the delegation was for or against calling in a Northern healer.
Once she had the gist, she told Eva, “When they make a decision, if you need Digby, come find me.”
Back in the guard room, she filled Paisley in.
Paisley’s aura tightened instantly. “Could it be a trap?”
Adelaide was worried about that too. Unless they were 100% sure Helia’s life was on the line, they couldn’t just send Digby in.
For all they knew, the “coma” was bait.
What if the officials poisoned Helia to lure Adelaide into a forced entry, only to wake the Princess up later and accuse the North of trespassing?
Adelaide weighed the worst–case scenarios in her head, struggling to make a call.
But if Helia actually died in that hotel, the hawks in the delegation would have nothing holding them back. They’d provoke the North until war was the only option left.
Finally, Adelaide looked up.
“Go ahead and get Dr. Digby here. I’m going to find a way to scout the situation inside.”
“Got it. On my way,” Paisley said, disappearing out the door.
Adelaide ordered the Capital Guard to lock down the hotel entrance–no one goes in.

If this was a trap, she wasn’t giving them anything to work with until she moved.
She circled the building, then found a window to slip through, heading toward Helia’s suite.

She dodged the Western sentries and reached the door. Just as she was about to pick the lock and slip inside, a familiar scent drifted toward her. She instinctively dropped into a fighting stance, but when she looked up, she almost laughed.
It was Prunella.
“Go back,” Prunella signaled through the mind link. “I’ll check it out.”
Adelaide didn’t argue. She headed back to the guard room.
Half an hour later, Avery and Paisley walked in, basically carrying Dr. Digby between them.
“I am so sorry to wake you this late, sir,” Adelaide said, giving the healer a respectful bow.
The four of them huddled around the fireplace. Avery broke the news about Sybil Rhodes potentially being in bed with Germain.
Adelaide went quiet for a beat. “So, Helia might actually be in real trouble.”
Paisley glanced toward the hallway leading to the rooms.
“See anything weird?”
“Prunella’s in there now,” Adelaide said. “We’re waiting on her.”
Paisley let out a sigh of relief.
“Prunella’s here? Good. She’s the only one of us who actually understands their language.”
A few minutes later, Prunella slipped into the room.
“What’s the word?” Adelaide asked immediately.
The fire was still going, and Prunella’s scent filled the small space as she relaxed.
“Helia is out cold,” she whispered.
“A few omega maids are watching her. They said not long after she got back from the Protocol Hall, she just… snapped. She went into a partial shift, bit one of the maids, and then collapsed.”
Paisley frowned.
“That’s worse than I thought. If she’s losing control over her shift, is she poisoned?”
A wolf losing control of their shift usually happens for two reasons: extreme emotional trauma or outside
interference.
