After dinner, Alpha Zander and Lance headed into the study. The soundproofing barrier went up the moment the door clicked shut.
Adelaide tried to follow them in, but Zander placed a heavy hand on her shoulder, blocking her path.
“I have some things I need to say to Lance in private.”
Adelaide puckered her lips but eventually turned away, heading toward the front courtyard where Prunella and Craig were still lingering.
During dinner, Klein had officially announced his return to the Shadow Peaks. He wasn’t just leaving on his own, either; he had ordered Prunella and Craig to get out and head back with him immediately.
Craig had taken the brunt of the scolding–Klein complained that ever since they arrived at the Blackthorn estate, a swarm of noble wolves had been dropping by just to admire his paintings.
Klein worried that Craig becoming too cozy with high–ranking officials in the capital would only bring unnecessary heat to Lance.
Prunella couldn’t help but grumble privately. She complained that Klein only kept them around when he needed them to fix messes in the shadows, only to kick them out the second the mission was over.
“Are you guys really leaving?” Adelaide asked, leaning dejectedly against Prunella’s shoulder.
“We don’t exactly have a choice.” Prunella reached up and ruffled Adelaide’s hair with her claws.
“Who dares to defy Klein’s orders? Besides, we don’t belong here. If we stay too long, the Marshals will start poking around, and we’ll just cause trouble for you.”
“I don’t see it as trouble,” Adelaide muttered. “I like having you guys around. Let’s just let Klein go back by himself.”
Prunella burst out laughing. “Don’t let him hear that. His ears are too sharp for his own good-
know what the consequences
you
would be.”

“In Blackthorn, he wouldn’t dare punish me.”

Craig chuckled from the side. “She’s right. Ever since he moved in here, he hasn’t lost his temper with you once.”
The three of them joked about Klein’s tyranny, but they all knew the truth: Klein carried a massive weight on his shoulders and had been run ragged managing the group and the recent chaos. He needed to go home and get some real rest.
The next morning, Adelaide stood at the territory gates, watching the carriage carrying Klein, Craig, and Prunella vanish down the road leading out of the capital.
Zander and Lisa weren’t in a rush to head back to the Bloodscar border; they planned to stay an extra day or two.
Zander truly missed Melinda, and part of him was waiting to see if his spineless daughter, Luna Skye, would find the courage to see her father one last time.
ad already visited the Blackthorn estate once–she had rushed over the moment
d–but Adelaide had been tied up with the delegation at the time.
next morning, Melinda got up before dawn and headed straight for the Silverlights se to find her mother, hoping to drag her along to see Zander.
The moment Luna Skye saw her daughter, she had a total meltdown.
She lunged forward and grabbed Melinda, sobbing hysterically.
“Do you
know what happened? Your father ran away! He left us and bolted! He took every gold coin, every scrap of precious ore… he doesn’t want me anymore! He actually abandoned his Luna!”
Melinda froze in her tracks, her voice a low whisper.
“Mom… what do you mean he ran?”
