Harper had her butler pick out a brand-new gown for Queenie’s cold body. She even went to the shop where Queenie used to sell her work and bought two of the protective rune necklaces Queenie had made herself.

“She’ll be happy to see the Moon Goddess wearing her own creations,” Harper said softly.

The death of a rejected female was like a pebble tossed into a deep lake-a tiny ripple, and then the city moved on and forgot.

Only the local pups started singing a nursery rhyme about how the Independent Center stepped up to bury Queenie, mocking her mate and her brother in the lyrics.

Adults drinking malt liquor in the streets would occasionally scold the kids for talking

nonsense.

In their minds, her ex had already moved on to a new relationship, and her brother had his own family to worry about; her being abandoned just seemed like a fate ordained by the Moon.

Who was really to blame? No one thought too hard about it. It wasn’t their problem.

Queenie’s funeral was held under the freezing, drizzly rains of late March. It was a miserable, muddy affair.

By the time April rolled around, the rain finally let up, and warm sunshine touched every corner of the capital.

The Independent Center then received its most unexpected visitor: Wanda Shuman.

It happened to be a public holiday. Lance and Adelaide had just returned to the Blackthorn estate after performing a soul-soothing ritual for the fallen members of the Frostfangs and the Doyles.

Luna Priscilla hadn’t felt up to the trip, but she’d spent the entire day at the family’s moon altar, devoutly reciting ancient prayers.

Susan was so moved that she relayed the message to Adelaide immediately.

Adelaide was reduced to tears on the spot. She rushed into Priscilla’s bedroom for a deep, heartfelt hug before being summoned by Caldwell to the secret briefing room.

Agents had intercepted intel regarding the Western delegation: Helia and her team had secretly arrived back at Snowdeer Town.

Paisley’s expression was grim as she delivered the report.

“It’s worse than we thought. They’ve massed 200,000 cavalry units outside the Bloodscar line. Helia took command and ordered them to stand down, but the soldiers aren’t fully listening. They’re still lingering at the border. Helia can suppress them for now, but we don’t know if she can actually seize absolute control of the legions.”

Lance and Adelaide weren’t shocked. The King had already received emergency dispatches from the border requesting stockpiles of potions and weapons in case of total war.

They’d seen this coming since the negotiations.

Lycan Erasmus knew the stakes, too. That was why he’d nearly lost it when Ulrik tried to quit.

If war broke out, the Bloodscar line needed every Doyle Alpha it could get.

While they were huddled over their strategy, Harper’s servant arrived, looking frantic.

The servant reported that Wanda had marched into the Independent Center demanding “asylum.”

Wanda had the audacity to demand they rename the entire facility “Wanda’s Private Sanctuary.”

Her arrogant ranting had infuriated Harper, and the two had nearly shifted to tear each other apart.

Adelaide was baffled.

“Is she insane? Why would she go to the Center?”

Even if Wanda was rejected, she was far from helpless. She didn’t meet the requirements for aid.
