For Adelaide’s sake, he didn’t care in the slightest about the kind of backlash or insults he would face within the noble werewolf circles.

Anilo from the Royal Patrol couldn’t have been more thrilled when he heard the news.

He firmly believed that after this purge, the Royal Patrol would emerge as a much more formidable fighting force.

However, his joy came a bit too soon.

The investigation had barely begun when several officials started protesting, claiming that the Royal Patrol’s duties overlapped with those of the Capital Guard. They petitioned Lycan Erasmus to disband the unit altogether.

Adelaide had long anticipated this day would come. Taking the initiative, she formally requested the King’s permission to map out and distinctly divide the responsibilities of both forces.

Lycan Erasmus didn’t approve the request immediately. Instead, he brought up a completely unrelated matter.

“Luna Clarissa asked about the progress of the She-Wolf Academy yesterday. Where do things stand?”

Adelaide replied, “The campus construction is complete, and we are currently recruiting suitable instructors.”

“Lycan Clarissa attaches great importance to this project. You need to focus all your energy on it,” Lycan Erasmus said. “As for the restructuring of the Royal Patrol, put it on hold for now.”

Adelaide’s wolf tensed up, but her face betrayed absolutely no surprise. She immediately replied with the utmost respect, “As you command, Your Majesty!”

She knew Lycan Erasmus had been waiting for the perfect excuse to dismantle parts of the Royal Patrol and fold them into the Capital Guard, purely to strip away her power.

Lycan Erasmus looked pleased with her obedience.

“Lycan Clarissa has missed you lately. Make sure you come to the palace to visit her when you have the time.”

Adelaide bowed her head in agreement.

Lycan Erasmus raised his eyes and scrutinized her one last time. She was completely drenched in Lance’s signature scent, a fact that inexplicably irritated Lycan Erasmus.

He waved a hand, dismissing her.

After leaving the study, Adelaide made her way down the spacious corridor, only to be suddenly cut off by a figure she absolutely despised.

“Hey, Adelaide.”

Virik.

Her wolf went on high alert instantly. She instinctively took a step back, her sharp gaze sweeping her surroundings.

At either end of the corridor, royal sentries patrolled back and forth, shooting them curious, probing glances.

Her pheromones instantly turned cold and distant, like a solid wall of ice.

“What do you want?”

Ulrik stared deeply at her.

He tried his hardest to pull back his pheromones, but Adelaide could still pick up a bitter, sour undertone.

“I… I just wanted to warn you. Lycan Erasmus actually knows you orchestrated the tavern brawl that day. He has other plans for the Royal Patrol. I just wanted to advise you don’t provoke him, or he will punish you severely.”

Adelaide’s expression remained eerily calm.

“Thanks for the warning.”

Seeing that the news didn’t shock her at all, Ulrik grew even more anxious.

“Don’t tell me… you… you already knew?”

Adelaide shook her head.

“If that’s all, I’ll be going.” She stepped around him, ready to leave.

“Adelaide… don’t go! We… we used to be together, after all. Why do you have to treat me like a total stranger?”

Ulrik desperately tried to keep her there. “I just wanted to warn you, I don’t mean anything else by it!”

Adelaide didn’t bother responding. She turned her head and kept walking.

Ulrik hurriedly chased after her, blocking her path once more.

Her patience was officially tapped out. A cold, sharp glint flashed in her eyes as she released a burst of her aura, physically shoving him back.

“Whatever your actual motive is, just spit it out!”

Ulrik’s face suddenly flushed red.

He asked, his voice thick with shame, “I… I wanted to ask if you know what the Western Fribe plans to do with Velda?”

“I have no idea.”

Adelaide strode away. That name could no longer spark a single ounce of anger in her heart.

Ulrik stood there in a daze, watching her back as she left, falling into a dead silence.

Ever since Velda had been hauled away by the Western Tribe’s envoys, Ulrik had been plagued by nightmares almost every single night.

In his dreams, Velda was being ripped apart by a pack of savage male wolves. With every chunk of flesh torn from her body, the pungent stench of blood would flood his nose.
