Right in front of Stanley, Adelaide kicked Owen to the ground. The sheer force of the blow made Stanley think it could have killed Owen.

Blood sprayed from Owen’s mouth. He clutched his stomach and curled into a ball, his mouth open but unable to even force out a groan.

Stanley quietly wiped the sweat from his forehead with his sleeve. Beads of it had gathered on the tip of his nose too. For a moment, he had no idea how to handle the situation.

Adelaide sat down across from him.

“Alpha Stanley. Tell me how you plan to handle this.”

Stanley wiped his face, his eyes darting around before he finally spoke, hesitant.

“This bastard was wrong; there’s no denying that. But Gideon bears responsibility too, doesn’t he? He was so greedy and shameless that he put his own daughter in that kind of danger.”

“His crimes will be judged fairly. That’s not yours to decide,” Adelaide said. “Right now, I’m asking how you plan to deal with this Omega.”

Stanley looked at Owen.

Owen struggled to his knees, still clutching his stomach, tears streaming down his face as he begged.

“I was drunk. That’s why I did it. Please, Gamma Adelaide, spare my life!”

Stanley stepped on his shoulder, grinding his heel into Owen’s skin, and roared.

“What right do you have to beg the Gamma? She’s a war hero who’s won more battles than you can count!”

Owen coughed up another mouthful of blood under his foot and collapsed face-down, his face smeared with blood and dirt.

Stanley grabbed him by the collar and hauled him up, then slapped him twice across the face, hard enough to leave him dazed before he crumpled back to the ground and spat out more blood.

Stanley picked up the wine glass from the table and smashed it against Owen’s head.

After the kicking, the beating, and the glass to the head, Stanley figured he’d done enough.

He sat back down, still forcing a look of fury onto his face, and called toward the door.

“Guards! Get in here and drag him away.”

The guards stepped in and moved to carry Owen out.

Adelaide raised a hand to stop them.

“No one touches him. Get out.”

The guards froze. They looked at Adelaide, then at Stanley.

Stanley lifted his glass of water and lowered his head to hide his surprise. He’d never expected her to be this ruthless.

Owen had already been beaten half to death, and she still wouldn’t let it go.

Did she actually want him dead?

Stanley had no choice but to wave the guards off. He turned back with an awkward smile.

“Gamma Adelaide, how would you like him dealt with? Just say the word, and I’ll have him dragged off and handled however you wish.”

Adelaide gave a cold smile. “Alpha Stanley, if you have him dragged off, I won’t get to see what happens to him afterward.”

Stanley’s smile stiffened.

“He did something wrong, but it’s not a capital offense, is it? Do you really want him dead? If this goes to the Ministry of Justice, he’ll get a few years in the dungeon at most.”

He raised an eyebrow, a note of mockery creeping into his voice.

“Let me remind you, Gamma. If this reaches the Ministry of Justice, the whole of New York will be talking about it. How old is that she-wolf, anyway? Still so young. I’m afraid she won’t be able to handle the weight of public opinion, and she might do something she can’t take back. So you don’t want a public trial either. That’s why you came to my pack privately to talk it over with me.”

A trace of sorrow and anger surfaced slowly in Adelaide’s eyes.

Her scent shifted. The aura she’d been deliberately holding back a moment ago surged out, a burning, metallic smell spreading across the table toward Stanley. A chil ran down his spine. His throat tightened on its own, and his breathing caught.

Owen, still lying on the floor, trembled uncontrollably.

“If this reaches the Ministry of Justice, she won’t be the only one who gets hurt.”

Her voice stayed calm, which only made it more frightening.

She rested her hand on the edge of the table. Claws pushed through her skin and scraped slowly across the surface, making a sharp, grating sound. It was a warning aimed straight at Stanley.

“Alpha, you’d better think about yourself first. You let your own pack guard commit a crime and assault a she-wolf. If this reaches the Lycan Erasmus, what do you think he’ll make of you? Of the Lycan Luna Camilla?”

Stanley pointed a trembling finger at her, unable to get out a full sentence.
