She didn't seem to notice me walking up to her until I sat down across from her. She looked up and her beautiful green eyes looked lifeless. They were almost pleading in a way. I could tell she was trying to block away things and emotions, and was doing a good job at it, too, but it was obvious she couldn't hold it all back for much longer.
"I'm Logan. And you are?" I ask, trying to see if this would help in any way.
"Max," she replied shortly in a quiet voice.
"Just Max?" Curiosity took over. She grinned at that.
"It Maxine, but I warn you now, don't ever call me that. It's Max," she declared, and I could tell she wasn't joking.
"Got it," I grinned back.
"So, you're Geena's cousin," Max guessed.
"Yeah, she is. I see you guys are friends," I replied.
"She's so... bubbly," Max said, unsure if that was the right word to describe Geena as.
"Yeah, Geena is, isn't she? I can see you are the opposite of her. So what word describes you?" I asked.
Her face darkened and she got a faraway look to her eyes. I swiftly changed the subject.
"Never mind," I said and she seemed to lightened up a little.
"Do you have siblings?" Max asked out of no where.
"Yeah, a little sister. Her name is Macey and she has so much spunk and personality. Her smile can literally brighten a room. She looks like my mom more then my dad, so we look quiet different. She's only 4 too." I smiled as I explained Macey, she is my world. I love her so much it hurts. Max smiled.
"She sounds amazing," Max smiles slightly.
"You don't seem like the type to like kids, no offense," I stated.
"Yeah, I know. I probably look like the type that would eat their souls for breakfast. Am I right?" Max laughed lightly and it was music to my ears.
I have no idea how long we stayed there just talking about the random, unimportant yet important little details about each other. We basically continued to ask each other the basic and cliche questions like your favorite color, animal, etc..
I am sort of surprised at her willingness to talk to me, and for this much time. We just met and it's pretty obvious that Max has major trust issues, and yet here she stays and continues to talk to me. Though, she never said anything about her family or past, and avoided those sort of questions like her life depended on it.
I heard the another bell ring, and this time I knew it was time for lunch, meaning fifth hour just ended. Max slowly got up and stopped at the edge of the table, looking at me.
"Are you going to sit there or are you going to come with me?"Max asked in a bored tone.
"I did? Oh, I guess I forgot," Geena lied, and wore a sheepish smile.
"Max packs a punch though, my jaw hurt for a good tow hours afterwards," Jacob added and rubbed his jaw.
"Baby," Max mumbled.
"What? I am not a baby!" Jacob whined.
"Says the whiner," she tossed back.
Jacob glared at her and she just laughed and patted him on the shoulder. "Man up, you little fetus, there's a lot for you to learn."
Embarrassment washes over his face as his face looks like a tomato. "I'm not a fetus, you're a fetus," he muttered back.
"What do you mean "a lot to learn"? Have you gone through something?" Hannah inquired lightly.
"Dammit," Max whispers. She looks around the table at everyone, who all worse similar curious expressions all expecting an answer she didn't want to give. So instead, Max got up and ran form the cafeteria.
"Why did she do that? Is it my fault she ran away?" Hannah whispered looking down.
