The doorbell rang as I finished setting up. I move some decorations to my liking as I made my way towards the door. As I open it I was met by the blinding sunlight as it began its sunset.
"Hurry up and get inside before I go blind," I say.
"Will do, ma'am," Veronica said. The small wheels of her suitcase made noise as she entered my apartment. I quickly shut the door and enter with her as well.
I see her looking around before she speaks. "Mm, it's cute." Veronica finally said as she set her luggage next to my couch.
"Beggars can't be choosers-" Veronica saw the look in my face and that told her to not finish. "Haha..." She waved it off before sitting down on my couch.
"Do you have something else to say about my home?"
"Uh, now that you say that--no. Nothing at all." She quickly covered her previous answer. I sigh as I take in a big breath.
"You would be sleeping on this couch, and now that I think about it you can stay as long as you need. But I need you to do an interview for me, do you accept? I have the contract--"
"Contract? But I'm just snitching, if I sign my name on any paper that says that I was a rat I might as well go back to that hell hole and die." Veronica said I guess no papers.
"Fine, can I tape record you?"
"Will you change the tone of my voice?"
"Sure."
"Deal." She smiles. I sit back on the couch and turn on the tape recorder before setting it on top of the coffee table right between us. I take my questions and pencils before meeting her gaze.
"Who is Baby to you?"
"A savior, for others he may be a nightmare. But he did save me." Veronica sighs and takes off her furry pink coat before slipping deeper into the couch.
"How is he a nightmare to others?" I began to write her previous answer and wait for her to speak again.
"He is always there, on your neck. And if he isn't on your neck, you're dead." I frown and look up, confused.
"What do you mean by that?"
"You are just a use to him, once he's done--well you're done." I grip my pencil harder as I wrote her answer.
"Are you related to him?" Even though I knew she was his cousin I still needed her response recorded on the ape.
Protocol.
"I'm his cousin. He didn't even know me until 3 years ago, I came to his door after my parents died. I looked for help, I searched and searched until I found his name in one of my father's notebook. They never talked."
"I'm sorry for their loss, but can you tell me why didn't your father and Baby talked?" They were brothers after all. Or at least used to be.
"My dad never liked Baby's lifestyle, that's my best guess. My mother--she always feared even when his name was mentioned. Back in Italy, everything was so normal, I was like any other child, that was until they were murdered." Her face turned into a sad one as she began to play with her fingers.
"We can take a break," I say.
"No, it is fine." Her voice broke but I nodded anyway.
"Just now you said 'back in Italy', are you from there? Is Baby from there too?"
She shakes her head.
"He's full Russian. I'm half Russian by my father but Italian by my mother. My father moved all across Russia to Italy to meet my mother. He once saw her, they talked for a week but then my mother was deported had to move back to her country." She smiles a bit as she continues.
"But the love-struck of my father flew all the way to her, and ta-da. Dear Veronica was born."
"Your father was sure one of a kind."
"Yes, he was."
