But a well-defined hand caught his wrist.

He glanced at Adrian but said nothing.

Isabel's procedure didn't take long. After Dr. Lawson cleaned and treated the wound, his expression was somber.

The anesthetic in her right hand had kicked in, and as the initial searing pain subsided, Isabel became more lucid.

“Dr. Lawson, my right hand...”

Dr. Lawson could only say, “Let’s admit you for now and see how it heals.”

Though he didn’t say it outright, Isabel had a sinking feeling.

The emergency room doors opened.

The moment she saw Selena, she lunged, raising her left hand to strike.

But her wrist was caught in mid-air.

She looked up at the tall, aloof man, her gaze colder than ever before. “Let go.”

Adrian didn’t release her, his dark eyes filled with disapproval. “Accidents happen in a lab. Besides, you’re just an assistant. What does an injury to your right hand matter?”

Isabel tried to pull her hand back, but his grip only tightened. She kicked out, aiming to end his family line.

His grip on her hand loosened.

Isabel looked at Selena, who was hiding behind Adrian, her voice frigid. “I didn't want to get into any of this with you, but you just had to push it. So remember this: from now on, I will make your life a living hell.”

Without another glance at Adrian, she turned and walked away.

Dylan hurried after her.

Old Mr. Foster finally spoke. “Accidents in a lab are one thing. But if a person can’t even hold a test tube steady, they have no right to be a researcher.”

His words were pointed but brief.

After they had all left, Selena clutched Adrian’s sleeve and whimpered, “Adrian, am I going to be fired from the lab?”

Dylan’s head snapped toward Isabel. “You need to be hospitalized? Why didn’t you say so?”

If she needed to be hospitalized, then the condition of her hand was serious.

But after her outburst, she had just walked away, and he had assumed it wasn't that bad.

Isabel forced a smile. “I don’t want to spend it in a hospital.”

During the years her mother was gravely ill, she had spent countless holiday in hospitals.

This year, with her impending divorce from Adrian, was supposed to be her first free holiday. She didn’t want to spend it in a hospital.

Dylan wanted to persuade her but couldn’t find the words. He asked Dr. Lawson for a solution.

Dr. Lawson said, “Then take the medication with you—topical and oral. Keep the wound dry. I’ll come to your place tomorrow to check on her.”

Dylan informed old Mr. Foster and went back up to get the medicine.

He took the opportunity to ask about the extent of Isabel’s injury.

Dr. Lawson sighed. “It’s not good. The burn reached the tendons. The use of her right hand might be limited.”
