Before noon we arrived in Bucharest, and since it was Sunday, the church bells were ringing non-stop. We returned the rental car and took a taxi to my flat.

When we arrived at the apartment, Oana began gathering her belongings.

"Where are you going?" I asked.

"To my house," she replied. "I have to feed my cat and see how my mother is doing."

"When will I see you again?" I asked.

"Call me before you leave to say good-bye. I hate parting," she replied.

"But we are not parting, I will be returning in two or three weeks," I responded.

"I'm not promising anything. I don't want to cause you heartache with tears and unnecessary talk. Let's say goodbye now, and make our break-up easier," she said with tears in her eyes.

"Oana, I really didn't expect this from you. This comes as a shock to me. I was sure we would see each other again," I said.

She got up, threw the keys I had given her on the bed, and left the apartment.

"Oana!" I shouted after her. But to no avail.

She didn't even turn around, just kept on going. I watched her as she walked down the street not once turning around. Finally she was out of sight.

"Is this how it will end between us?" I asked myself.

I went downstairs to the café and drank two espressos, one after the other. I bought a pack of Marlboros and smoked a cigarette as my entire body still felt agitated and flustered.

I took a taxi and went to see Angelo. When I arrived at Piccola Napoli, Mihaela told me that Angelo and Rosanna had gone to the Lost Dreams bar.

I asked Mihaela to sit down next to me. "I have to tell you something," I said. When she was sitting I said, "Oana left me."

"You're leaving too. Why are you surprised about her?" she commented.

"But I am still here tonight and tomorrow. Why did she have to leave now?" I asked.

"It would seem that either parting is difficult for her or she has squeezed you for everything she could, restaurants, trips, clothing, jewellery, money and more, so it's time to leave," Mihaela suggested.

I remained silent. If she only knew what Oana really got from me, she would surely think I had gone insane.

That afternoon I noticed that I had several missed phone calls from a number that I didn't recognize. They were from the real estate office where Dorina worked. They informed me that Dorina had asked that I call her back immediately. It was urgent.
