At this point, Oana broke out in uncontrollable and heartbreaking tears that left me paralyzed, not knowing what to do. I hugged her and she clung to me tightly, but her crying only increased and became stronger. She cried for a very long time, until she gradually calmed down.
My heart was torn. I couldn't believe the deep love she had for me. I must have a very strong immunity to heartbreak to explain that such a thing didn't happen to me. I couldn't say that I didn't have feelings for her, but I wonder if they were feelings of compassion or perhaps just sexual attraction. I didn't know. But one thing was certain; I would miss her in the future and probably think about her for a long time to come.
"Come with me to the broker," I suggested.
She was sporting dark sunglasses and had a colorful bandana tied round her forehead. She looked so young in the track suit and sneakers that she was wearing, that I just had to compliment her.
When we arrived at Cismigiu Park the broker and the buyer, a professional football player, were there waiting for us. The broker had already shown the buyer the apartment, but he wanted to see it again before he actually purchased it.
We all went up together to the apartment. He went through all the rooms, and then went on the roof to see that that there were no leaks or cracks and on the balcony to see that no water leaked in from there. He asked me to turn on the heating and air conditioning, to see if they were in good working condition. Everything worked and was to his satisfaction.
The buyer then turned to me and said, "Okay, so one hundred and forty thousand it is." I looked at the broker and said, "Is this what you brought me here for? I told you that the price is two hundred thousand euros."
Now the football player took a shot at the broker and said, "Are you crazy? You told me all along that the price is one hundred and sixty thousand."
It was now my turn to be indignant, and so I said to the buyer, "If you thought that price is one hundred and sixty thousand, why did you say one hundred and forty thousand?"
"I tried," he answered, with a shrug.
We arranged to meet at Giorgina's office the next morning.
"Make sure you bring all the money in cash," I said to the buyer. "I want you to know that the contract will state that the purchase price is thirty thousand euros. Is that alright?"
"Sure," he answered.
The next morning the contract was signed and I received the cash. Giorgina and the broker accompanied me to the bank where I deposited the money. "In Bucharest you don't walk around alone with such sums of money," they told me.
"Well, let me tell you something interesting," I said. "We don't do so in Arezzo either."
At noon, I went with Oana to Popescu's office, who received us with a big hug.
